Title Feedback: feedforward and peer learning
Presenter and affiliation: Dr Mike Calvert, York St John University
Intended Audience: Lecturers and other academic staff
Duration: 1 day: 8:45 AM to 3:00PM
Location: S45-108 ZAIN E-Learning Center, Sakheir Campus, University of Bahrain

The session will begin with a justification for feedback and the need for feedback to inform future learning. Lecturers are often put off by the workload associated with feedback but there are economical ways of providing feedback that can have a major impact on learning. We will spend time looking at ways in which you might be able to incorporate these ideas into your teaching and learning. Feedback is only half the story, however. Feedback looks backward and students need to know how to move forward in their learning.

We will carry out activities involving peer teaching and jigsaw reading focusing on many ways in which feedback can be conducted orally and in written form.

Peer support and assessment

One of the most important sources of learning is the fellow student. Using peer evaluation can be a powerful means of working. This links well with the previous session as feedback needs to be both timely and focused.

Learning Outcomes:

After the completion of the function, the participant will be able to:

  1. Apply a range of feedback practices to the teaching and learning
  2. Recognise the importance of feedforward in supporting learning
  3. Incorporate peer learning and assessment

Link to UK Professional Standard Framework (PSF):

Feedback is recognized as one of the most powerful aids to learning. As such it is central to the teaching and learning role of the lecture and important in the UKPSF. Feedback can be linked to peer assessment which recognizes the role of the fellow student in supporting learning.
