UOB Publishes New Book on Intellectual Property and Modern Technological Applications
The University of Bahrain has announced the publication of a new book by Dr. Hanan Mohamed Almawla, Assistant Professor in the Department of Private Law at the College of Law, titled “A Brief Guide to Intellectual Property Rights and Their Contemporary Applications in Bahraini Law: A Comparative Study.”
The book is intended for those interested in intellectual property rights in general and for undergraduate law students in particular.
Dr. Almawla explained that the book is divided into two main sections: the first focuses on artistic and literary property (copyright and related rights), while the second addresses industrial property (patents, utility models, industrial designs, and trademarks).
She noted that what distinguishes this book is its focus on contemporary applications of intellectual property rights, especially the challenges posed by technological innovations and artificial intelligence, while also highlighting the judiciary’s stance through recent relevant case law.
The book examines legal issues related to intellectual property rights from a comparative perspective, presenting the position of the Bahraini legislator alongside those of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as well as selected Arab laws such as those of Egypt and Jordan, and international jurisdictions including the United Kingdom, the United States, and France.
Dr. Hanan Mohamed Almawla is the recipient of the LexisNexis Middle East Independent Academic Writer of the Year Award (2020). She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP) obtained in 2013, a Ph.D. in Intellectual Property from the University of London (UK, 2013), an LL.M. in Intellectual Property from the University of Manchester (UK, 2008), and an LL.B. from the University of Bahrain. Her research interests focus on the relationship between modern technologies and intellectual property law, as well as civil law more broadly.
