Equal Opportunities Committee at University of Bahrain Discusses Organizing Scientific Forum for Bahraini Women in Technology

The Equal Opportunities Committee at the University of Bahrain discussed organizing a scientific forum titled “Justice and Women’s Empowerment in Technology” at the beginning of the first semester of the upcoming academic year 2016–2017. The committee also discussed establishing a group dedicated to research and consultancy on women’s issues.

This came during a meeting chaired by Dean of the College of Physical Education and Physiotherapy, Professor Dr. Mona Saleh Al-Ansari, at the university’s Sakhir campus. Participants in the meeting discussed proposed topics in cooperation with the university’s Deanship of Scientific Research.

Professor Al-Ansari stated: “The forum aims to raise awareness of women’s role in technological empowerment and to emphasize their important role in this field. It will help highlight the status of women in Bahrain and the obstacles they face in attaining leadership positions in technology, science, and engineering.” She added, “This forum will be organized in collaboration with professionals from the industrial sector, the Supreme Council for Women, and a group of experts affiliated with the university.”

She added that work on establishing the dedicated research group on women will begin immediately, followed by selecting appropriate topics and nominating researchers who will participate in preparing the studies and research.

Professor Al-Ansari explained: “The established research group aims to conduct studies related to women’s issues and contribute to solving their social, economic, cultural, and educational challenges, in addition to offering consultancy to community institutions and organizing workshops and training programs.”

The meeting was attended by committee members including: Dean of Scientific Research Dr. Mohammed Redha Abdullah, Head of the Humanities Research Unit Dr. Ali Ibrahim Ismail, and Head of the Finance and Business Studies Unit Dr. Abdullah Mohammed Al-Sadiq.

It is worth noting that the Equal Opportunities Committee, established in 2014, aims to promote the culture of integrating women’s needs and equal opportunities within the university community, and to encourage scientific research that highlights women’s issues within the university and in the wider community.
