UOB Students Participate in CERN Summer Program

Students from the University of Bahrain took part in the 2025 Summer Student Program organized by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland, an annual program in which the university has participated since 2016.

This year’s participants included Nibras Jafil, a Mathematics major with a minor in Computer Science from the College of Science, and Ali Ridha Al-Adraj from the Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering.

The program offers specialized scientific tours of CERN’s various departments, lectures delivered by top researchers, and a rare opportunity to explore pioneering projects in particle physics, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

As part of the program, Nibras was involved in a practical project carried out in collaboration with CERN’s IT Department and the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The project aimed to develop an intelligent, knowledge-based chatbot capable of answering technical questions related to the LHCb experiment. It involved building a dedicated knowledge database and training the model using AI techniques.

In addition, Nibras participated in the scientific hackathon held at CERN, where multidisciplinary and multinational teams worked on innovative solutions using quantum computing to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her team focused on using quantum computing to discover high-conductivity materials to reduce energy loss and drive innovation in energy, healthcare, and industry.

For his part, Ali worked on a project involving the inspection and assessment of a construction site currently under development. He completed several training courses in safety and radiation protection, which enabled him to access experimental zones and active work areas. He also designed 2D and 3D layout plans for a small barbecue and outdoor gathering space on-site using AutoCAD and Revit, and developed a redesigned staircase for one of CERN’s buildings to address a structural issue. During the internship, he also attended advanced lectures covering topics such as applied physics, particle detectors, and more.
