Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Early Access Program
About the Program
Q
What is the UOB Early Access Program?
The Early Access Program is an official University of Bahrain initiative that enables secondary school students to enroll in regular UOB courses for academic credit while they are still in school. Students earn an official UOB academic transcript that may shorten their future degree duration if they later enroll at the University. There is no commitment to attend UOB after the program — the credits belong to the student regardless.
Q
Will the credits count toward a full UOB degree?
Yes. Credits earned through the Early Access Program appear on an official UOB transcript and may be applied toward a future UOB degree if the student enrolls at the University. This can reduce the total number of credits the student needs to complete during full-time study, shortening the time to graduation.
Q
What if I take the program but later choose another university?
The transcript and credits remain yours. Whether or not other universities recognize the credit is at the discretion of each receiving institution, but the official UOB academic record stands on its own and reflects real university-level academic work.
Eligibility
Q
Who can apply to the program?
The program is open to secondary school students from both government and private schools. Eligibility depends on the student's grade level: Grade 12, Grade 11, and Grade 10 students may all participate, though the duration of participation differs by grade (see the next section).
Q
I am under 18 years old. Can I still apply?
Yes. Students under the age of 18 are welcome to participate, but they must submit a parental or guardian consent form before enrolling. The form is available at the Registration Directorate. Once the form is submitted, enrolment proceeds normally.
Q
Can students from private schools apply, or only from government schools?
Students from both government and private schools are equally eligible to apply.
Q
Can students who are finishing Grade 9 apply to the program?
No. The program is open only to students currently enrolled in Grade 10, Grade 11, or Grade 12. Students who are finishing Grade 9 are not eligible to apply. They may apply once they have entered Grade 10.
Q
Which grade levels are eligible for the program?
Only students in Grade 10, Grade 11, and Grade 12 are eligible to participate. Students in Grade 9 or below cannot apply, even if they are about to finish the school year. Eligibility begins once a student is enrolled in Grade 10.
Duration of Participation
Q
How long is the program if I am in Grade 12?
Grade 12 students may participate in one summer term, taken in the summer before they begin full-time university study. This is the shortest path under the program. Because there is only one summer available, Grade 12 students cannot take courses that have prerequisites which themselves must be completed at UOB.
Q
How long is the program if I am in Grade 11?
Grade 11 students may participate in one summer term, followed by the next Fall semester, the following Spring semester, and the summer term that follows. In total, this covers roughly one academic year plus the summers on either side. Grade 11 students have time to take sequential courses such as General Chemistry I followed by General Chemistry II in a later term.
Q
How long is the program if I am in Grade 10?
Grade 10 students may participate in two full academic years, including all summer terms. This is the longest path under the program and provides the most opportunity to take sequential courses across the catalogue.
Q
Do I have to take a course every semester?
No. A single registration covers the student's full eligible period under the program, and participation is flexible. Students may take a course every term or only in some terms, depending on their school workload and personal circumstances.
Enrolment
Q
How do I apply or register?
Registration is completed online through the UOB Student Information System at sis.uob.edu.bh. The registration window opens once a year and applies to enrolment in the program as a whole — not to individual semesters. Students who register need not take a course every term; they may choose to enroll in any given semester or skip it. The exact dates of the annual registration will be announced.
Q
Who do I contact if I have questions?
The program team can be reached at earlyaccess@uob.edu.bh for all enquiries about eligibility, courses, enrolment, and fees.
Q
When does registration open?
Registration opens each year in advance of each semester. The exact window varies from semester to semester, so please check sis.uob.edu.bh closer to the time for current dates.
Fees
Q
How much does the program cost?
Fees depend on the student's nationality and the number of credit hours of the course. Bahraini students pay 8 BHD per credit hour. Non-Bahraini students pay 80 BHD per credit hour. If the student is registering for the summer term, an additional one-time registration fee of 50 BHD applies, charged once per summer regardless of how many courses the student takes. The Fall and Spring semesters do not have an equivalent registration fee.
Q
How much for a three-credit course (the most common case)?
For a Bahraini student, a three-credit course costs 24 BHD in tuition (3 × 8). For a non-Bahraini student, it costs 240 BHD (3 × 80). If the course is taken in the summer term, add the 50 BHD summer registration fee: 74 BHD total for a Bahraini student, 290 BHD total for a non-Bahraini student.
Q
How much is it for a four-credit course?
For a Bahraini student, a four-credit course costs 32 BHD in tuition (4 × 8). For a non-Bahraini student, it costs 320 BHD (4 × 80). If taken in the summer term, the totals become 82 BHD and 370 BHD respectively, after adding the 50 BHD summer registration fee.
Q
Why are the rates different for Bahraini and non-Bahraini students?
The Early Access Program uses the standard UOB tuition rates, which differ by nationality for all students at the University, not only program participants.
Q
Is the summer registration fee per course, or once per term?
Once per summer term, regardless of how many courses the student takes. For example, if a student enrolls in two courses, they pay the 50 BHD registration fee a single time, plus the tuition for both courses.
Courses
Q
What courses are offered through the program?
The program offers a set of approved courses drawn from four colleges: the College of Business Administration, the College of Information Technology, the College of Science, and the College of Arts. The list spans subjects including economics, accounting, mathematics, the natural sciences, computer programming, philosophy, Arabic studies, Islamic studies, design, and several foreign languages. The full catalogue with descriptions is available in the accompanying Program Knowledge Reference document.
Q
How do I see which courses are running in the next term?
The live source for the current term's offerings is the UOB Course Schedule at ucs.uob.edu.bh. Students should select the upcoming term, browse the available courses by college, and look for in-person sections. Each entry shows the course code, title, section, instructor, days, times, location, and delivery mode.
Q
Are the courses taught in English or Arabic?
Most courses in the College of Science, the College of Information Technology, and the College of Business Administration are taught in English. Courses in the College of Arts are typically taught in Arabic, with the exceptions of Basic Writing Skills (taught in English) and the foreign language courses (taught from scratch in the target language).
Q
Are there any online courses?
Yes. The Human Rights course (HRLC 107) is delivered online as a university general requirement.
Prerequisites and Rules
Q
Can I take General Chemistry II in my first term?
No. General Chemistry II (CHEMY 102) requires General Chemistry I (CHEMY 101) as a prerequisite, and the prerequisite must have been completed at UOB. A student new to the program should select General Chemistry I in their first term, and may take General Chemistry II in a subsequent term after passing the first course.
Q
Can I take Calculus II in my first term?
No. Calculus II (MATHS 132) requires Calculus I (MATHS 131) as a prerequisite, completed at UOB. New students should take Calculus I first. The catalogue also contains a 3-credit version of Calculus I (MATHS 101), which is the prerequisite for MATHS 102 — only MATHS 131 satisfies the prerequisite for MATHS 132.
Q
There seem to be two courses called Calculus I — what's the difference?
Yes — the catalogue lists Calculus I (MATHS 101) at 3 credits and Calculus I (MATHS 131) at 4 credits. Both are introductory calculus courses with no formal prerequisite. Which to take depends on your intended degree program — details at uob.edu.bh.
Q
Can I take General Biology II in my first term?
No. General Biology II (BIOLS 103) requires General Biology I (BIOLS 102) as a prerequisite, completed at UOB. Students should take General Biology I first.
Q
I am in Grade 12. Can I take any of the Level II science courses (CHEMY 102, BIOLS 103, MATHS 132)?
No, unfortunately. Grade 12 students participate in one summer term only, which is not enough time to complete the Level I prerequisite at UOB and then take the Level II course. Grade 12 students who are interested in these subjects should take the Level I course (CHEMY 101, BIOLS 102, or MATHS 131) instead.
Q
Are there other prerequisites I should be aware of?
Yes — the sequential pairs (Calculus I/II, General Biology I/II, General Chemistry I/II, General Physics I/II, Computer Programming I/II) are the courses in the catalogue with a strict prerequisite that must be completed at UOB. All other courses can be taken in any order. For some courses, a strong mathematical or scientific background is recommended (for example, calculus is recommended ahead of General Physics I), but it is not formally required.
Benefits
Q
Why should I consider joining the Early Access Program?
The program allows secondary school students to earn official UOB academic credits before starting full-time university study, to experience real university-level learning, to graduate from a future degree faster, to explore a potential major before committing to it, and to build academic confidence ahead of full enrolment.
Q
Will the program make my future degree shorter?
It can. Credits earned through the program appear on an official UOB transcript and may count toward a future UOB degree, reducing the number of credits the student needs to complete during full-time enrolment. The exact reduction depends on the student's chosen degree program and how the credits map onto its requirements.
Q
I am not sure what I want to study yet. Is the program still useful?
Yes. One of the program's intended benefits is precisely to help students explore a future major before committing to it. By taking an introductory course in an area of interest, students can test whether the subject suits them, all while earning real academic credit that counts if they decide to pursue it further.
