UOB Students Participate in the Gulf Theater Festival in Jeddah

 

With the participation of nine universities from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in addition to the University of Bahrain (UOB) and universities from the State of Kuwait and the Sultanate of Oman, students of the Theater Club at UOB participated in the fifth Gulf Theater Festival for Universities and Higher Education Institutions in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, during the period from the 2nd to the 7th of February 2020.

The students of UOB performed a theatrical work entitled "Al-Qadem", directed by the Artist Ebrahim Khalfan, written by Waleed Ikhlasi, and performed by the students: Ali Hussain, Hamad Al-Haddad, Ali Hassan and Ja’afar Al-Bannai.

In this context, the Dean of Student Affairs at UOB, Dr. Fatima Mohammed Al-Malki, who headed the student delegation, stated: “The Theater Festival for Universities of the Arab Gulf states provides an opportunity for students in these universities to exchange experiences and expertise, and represents an opportunity for university students to participate and show their experiences, ideas and expertise.". Furthermore, Dr. Al-Malki expressed her happiness at the participation of UOB students in the Theater Festival.

Participants in the Festival will perform 12 student plays, practical seminars, theater acting training courses, and a mask-making course.

UOB delegation consisted of Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Fatima Al-Malki, Instructor of Theater Club Shaikha Bukamal, the theatrical work director Ebrahim Khalfan, and club students Ali Hussain, Hamad Al-Haddad, Ali Hassan, and Ja’afar Al-Bannai.

English Language Students at UOB Revitalize the Shakespearean Theater in a Modern Language

 

On Monday. 23rd of December 2019, Students of the English Language Center at the University of Bahrain (UOB) revitalized the Shakespearean theater using simple language by performing his famous comedy play "Much Ado About Nothing".

As the students of the University's English Language Center were used to end each semester with a theatrical performance that attracted hundreds of students in the Shaikh Abdulaziz Hall on the University campus in Sakhir.

The theatrical performance was attended by the President of UOB Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, and several faculty members, along with a large number of male and female students.

The Director of the English Language Center, Dr. Ghada Ahmed Jassim, affirmed, "The Center is keen to continue to support student entertainment, educational, and theatrical projects, in order to provide an appropriate and creative environment, as activities are the only outlet through which students can show their potential away from the pressure of study."

Furthermore, she stated: "Student activities contribute to refining students' skills, and encourage them to work, produce, and to apply the theoretical materials they have studied on the ground."

Both students and professors of the English Language Center participated in the play, which is one of the most famous comedies by the English writer and poet William Shakespeare.

The play revolves around several themes, including lying, friendship, and justice. On stage, the actors showed the effect of lying on humans, even if it’s for good reasons.

Moreover, Dr. Jassem said: "The play was performed in simple and clear English, taking into account the levels of all students, in order to be able to communicate the objectives and significance of this play to them."

UNDP and UOB Hold a Joint Cooperation Program to Support the SDGs

In line with the initiatives of the Kingdom of Bahrain to support innovation as a source of sustainable development, the President of the University of Bahrain (UOB) Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah signed a joint cooperation program with Mr. Stefano Pettinato, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which will provide support for the sustainable development goals.

Under this joint cooperation, UNDP shall provide technical support to develop the University's capabilities, by providing local and international information, studies and skills, and trying to build upon them and benefit from them in establishing sustainable development values ??and achieving their goals.

On this occasion, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah affirmed that the joint cooperation maintained by UOB with UNDP is one of the essential steps towards integrating sustainable development into university education, and he stated: “UOB attaches great importance to achieving and promoting the sustainable development goals, and the University shall continue to include these goals in most of its scientific activities such as the conferences and seminars it holds, in addition to the student projects and activities organized by the University, in conformity of the National University with government initiatives and directions.

For his part, Mr. Stefano Pettinato said: “UNDP is pleased to sign the project document for the sustainable development goals with our partner UOB and in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And through this cooperation, we hope to consolidate and strengthen the principles of sustainable development among university students, and to mainstream these principles among staff and faculty.”.

Pettinato further stated: "Through this cooperation, which will be based on the principles of innovation, knowledge sharing and capacity development, the vision set by the University leadership shall be further implemented, with the aim of achieving three general objectives: First, to mainstream the principles of sustainable development among students, faculty members and employees of UOB, secondly, establishing a unit dedicated to the sustainable development goals; and thirdly, encouraging the role of UOB as a stimulus for the advancement of sustainable development inside and outside of Bahrain.

“The World Human Development Report issued by UNDP for the year 2019, which was published recently, assumes that higher education institutions play a major role in achieving equality and overcoming differences, driven significantly by digital transformation and climate change, and providing opportunities for a better and more sustainable future for societies. In realizing how schools, universities and the education sector play a major role in contributing to the achievement of the sustainable development goals, we shall bring those principles to Bahrain and we trust that this project will help UOB cover this role while the student body, faculty and staff will learn, share ideas, and innovate in an inclusive environment".

Furthermore, Pettinato added: "I am confident that this cooperation between the UNDP and UOB, which relies on ongoing initiatives between our institutions, will ultimately support UOB as a supporter of sustainable development for everyone within the Kingdom of Bahrain".

The meeting was attended by the joint working team of UOB, UNDP, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Music Students Play Musical Compositions for their Classmates on Musical Event

Students of the Music Club in the Artistic Activities Division of the Deanship of Student Affairs presented a group of musical compositions on the piano, as part of a musical event held by the students for their classmates.

The event aimed to present a musical performance that suits different artistic tastes, to enhance the musical confidence of the students of the University of Bahrain, and to focus on the creativity of students in musical pieces in general and their musical compositions in particular.

Furthermore, a specialist at the Music Unit, Saleh Isa, stated that what distinguishes the event is the musical pieces that some students have composed, and the event presented musical pieces from different eras such as: the music of the new age school, the classical, the music of the romantic era, in addition to the diversity of the musical pieces, among which were the blues and pop. Also, some students played some of the old and modern Arabic, Gulf, English and French songs, and the soundtracks of famous movies.

UOB Participates in A GCC Accreditation Center Workshop for Laboratories International Standards

 

11 November 2019

The Renewable Energy Laboratory Technician at the University of Bahrain (UOB), Warda Eqab, participated in a workshop entitled: “International requirements for accreditation of testing and calibration laboratories, uncertainty calculations and internal audits according to the International Standard 17025:2017 ISO/IEC, organized by the GCC Accreditation Center.

According to Eqab, the aforementioned international standard specifications are the specifications used internationally by accreditation and conformity bodies in judging the performance of laboratories and measuring their efficiency in conducting all kinds of tests and calibrations.

The workshop lasted for three days and it aimed to introduce the participants to the competency requirements of testing and calibration laboratories according to this specified standard, or how to comply with such requirements, applying modern concepts in laboratory management, designing and implementing internal audits according to the standard, and reviewing the definitions and terms related to uncertainty and uncertainty requirements in international standards, in addition to identifying uncertainty errors, the different methods used in calculating uncertainty, and methods of using uncertainty in assesing results and product conformity.

The workshop was attended by laboratory quality directors, test personnel, technical laboratory directors, test administrators, newly appointed laboratories employees, and technical and administrative evaluators and auditors.

Work on the first hackathon in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC) begun on Friday morning (18 October 2019) at the University of Bahrain (UOB), which is set up by the National Space Science Agency (NSSA) in cooperation with "Clever Play", which is licensed by the American space agency (NASA) in the field of space, and it shall be held over the 18th and 19th of October 2019.

On this occasion, the Minister of Transportation and Communications and Chairman of the Board of Directors of NSSA His Excellency Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed stated that “ This event comes within the Agency’s keenness to implement the directions of the wise leadership, recalling what was stated in the lofty speech of His Majesty the King during the opening of the second session of the National Council in its fifth version, and the directions of His Majesty to work on developing a national plan for the digital economy. Such events have a great impact on qualifying national competencies and providing them with skills and knowledge to keep pace with the rapid changes in the world of technology and the requirements of the labor market and preparing them for the future. in addition to the fact that the event focuses on advanced technologies, what distinguishes it is that it is world-class, with more than 235 parties from around the world participating in its implementation, and more than 18,000 participants.

For his part, the President of UOB Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah stated that the University prioritizes sustainable development goals of the Kingdom of Bahrain 2030 vision and is working with partners in various fields to achieve the highest levels of quality and efficiency in the field of educational curriculum development and scientific research.

Also, Prof. Hamzah praised the cooperation with NSSA, pointing out that the memorandum of understanding that was concluded earlier between NSSA and UOB included cooperation in supporting space science at the national level, as the cooperation contributed to achieving mutual benefit to meet national needs in support of the sustainable development goals.

On his part, the CEO of NSSA, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Asiri, said that the participation in this event came out of the Agency’s keenness to achieve its strategic objectives of spreading the technical culture of space science in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and to support this sector at the national level through the development of research activities for students majoring in different sciences, in preparation for creating joint cooperation with academic institutions and higher education institutions to integrate space sciences into educational curricula and research projects, with the Agency’s keenness to follow up, evaluate and develop science to ensure the highest levels of quality and efficiency in line with its vision and mission to advance this sector in preparation for global competition .

The founding member of "Clever Play", Shaikha Latifa Al Khalifa, confirmed that this event comes within the program of the national initiative recently launched by the company under the title "STEM BAHRAIN", which aims to establish a multi-disciplinary educational system based on the best scientific and technological approaches that stimulate innovation.

Moreover, the representatives of NSSA and “Clever Play” thanked UOB, Batelco, and Bahrain National Gas Company (Banagas) in appreciation of their unlimited support for the space sector and their contribution to support this event.

UOB Wins the Best Technology Project Award at the Gulf Level

During the Digital Transformation Conference for Digital Institutions held in the Emirate of Dubai, the University of Bahrain (UOB) won and received the award for the best technology project at the level of the GCC countries, in the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions project that is currently applied in the University's libraries.

Head of the Information Networks Division at the University’s Information Technology Center and the person responsible for the project, Suhaib Al-Abdi, stated that “This technology is a modern virtual simulation that provides an advanced and safe interactive environment for university students, as it hosts a desktop operating system on central servers in the University’s main data center. Indicating that the smart desktop technology is one of the latest interactive technologies provided for users, as it offers many advantages, including increased productivity, reduced errors, ease of developing devices and providing them with the necessary updates automatically and quickly, easy remote access to the user's device to provide the necessary support in case this is needed, as well as centrally and automatically enhancing information security on the user's machine."

Also, UOB is making strenuous efforts in digital transformation, as it is in line with the seventh axis “creating a changing environment that meets the requirements and accommodates future variables” of its development plan (2016-2021), towards creating a modern campus by adopting modern technical concepts and the latest modern technologies that will contribute to changing how we work within the University and how students learn.

Art Exhibition at UOB Shows Features of Chinese Nature and Culture

Prof. Hamzah: Our Cooperation with China is Broad and Ongoing and We’re Holding a Joint Conference in November

On Thursday, 26th of September 2019, an exhibition was organized by the Confucius Institute for Chinese Language at the University of Bahrain (UOB), in which two Chinese artists exhibited paintings that show features of China’s nature and its beauty.

The exhibition, which portrayed birds and fish, was attended by Professor of Arts at Shanghai University, Dr. Khi Xi, and Associate Professor at the same University, Hu Xin Xin, and it attracted many university professors, students and those interested in the arts.

During the opening ceremony of the exhibition, the President of UOB, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, valued in his speech the great and continuous cooperation between UOB and the Chinese higher education institutions, saying: “Cultural and scientific cooperation with the Republic of China in general, and Shanghai University in particular, is multidisciplinary; as a forum on renewable energy for sustainable development shall be held on November 2019 at UOB, in which the researches of the University of Shanghai shall be presented with research from UOB in the same field.”

Also, the President of UOB praised the Chinese art throughout history, the interest of Chinese artists in portraying nature, and their high artistic abilities in their use of the color black only in its various shades.

He added, "The role of UOB comes through its cooperation with the Confucius Institute and the University of Shanghai," indicating that "This exhibition represents original art from major artists and professors in China."

The Confucius Institute, which was established about five years ago at UOB, will be celebrating the Confucius Day, which falls on the 23rd of September by holding several events that will continue until the 29th of this month.

For his part, the representative of the Chinese Embassy in Bahrain, Ling Xu Min, confirmed that the establishment of the Confucius Institute at UOB in 2014 contributed to enhancing cultural cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and China.

Furthermore, he stated that, "The institute’s courses, in which hundreds of students and employees have been involved, have contributed to enhancing the presence of the Chinese language and its culture among the people of Bahrain, as the language is a window to get acquainted with cultures and a way to achieve mutual benefit among civilizations." Also, he thanked UOB and its Administration for their continuous support for the activities of the Institute.

The paintings of the Chinese artists included many subjects, including: fish, deep sea, reptiles, turtles, crows, flocks of birds, and bushes. Also, conceptual artists participated in the artistic program, who are: Balqees Fakhro, Adnan Al-Ahmad, Mahdi Al-Jalawi, Ahmed Anan and Khalifa Showaiter.

Furthermore, Artist Dr. Khi Xi expressed his wishes that the exhibition would convey something from China’s arts and culture, while Artist Dr. Hu Xin expressed her pleasure in giving lectures on art, hoping that "the friendship between Bahrain and China will continue and grow, so that we continue to learn from each other in various fields, and especially in the sciences and culture of art. "

Also, the exhibition was attended by the Vice President for Academic and Postgraduate Programs, Prof. Waheeb Naser Al-Naser, and a number of Bahraini artists and those interested in conceptual art, in addition to university students.

The activities of the Chinese Art Fair are scheduled to continue until next Sunday, 29 September 2019, with several lectures, workshops and dialogue sessions.

It is worth noting that the Confucius Institute at UOB was established in April of 2014 and has been teaching the Chinese language since its inauguration through courses for university students and sessions for those wishing to study the language of delegated learners from the country’s ministries and institutions.
