Dr. Sh. Lulwa Ahmed Al-Khalifa Highlights Civil and Political Rights in the Digital Age
As part of the “Legal Insights” lecture series organized by the Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission, Dr. Lulwa Ahmed Al-Khalifa, Assistant Professor of International Human Rights Law at the University of Bahrain, delivered a lecture on civil and political rights in the digital age.
Dr. Sh. Al-Khalifa highlighted how digital transformation enhances human rights by providing new avenues for freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and participation in political life. She noted that access to information and communication via social media facilitates the exchange of ideas and public dialogue, supporting citizen engagement and transparency in governance.
The lecture also addressed key challenges facing civil and political rights in the digital era, including the protection of digital privacy, combating misinformation, bridging the digital divide, and safeguarding democratic participation online.
Dr. Sh. Al-Khalifa emphasized the need for coordinated efforts by governments, civil society, and private sector actors to manage these risks while ensuring that digital advances serve humanity and the public interest.
Concluding her lecture, Dr. Sh. Al-Khalifa stressed that while digital transformation offers opportunities to enhance social, economic, and political life, these advances must be grounded in respect for human rights, equality, and justice, ensuring that technological progress benefits society broadly.
