Finance Minister meets winning teams of ‘Enhancing Outdoor Spaces Cooling in Bahrain’ competition

Manama, May 13 (BNA): Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy, met with the winning teams of the “Enhancing Outdoor Spaces Cooling in Bahrain” competition. The competition was organised by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture in collaboration with the University of Bahrain and Bahrain Polytechnic.
The meeting was attended by Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture; and Dr. Rawya Al Mannai, Head of the Judging Committee.
Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa emphasised that the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, continues its efforts to address climate challenges through ambitious strategies and practical initiatives. He underlined the importance of innovative, sustainable solutions that use modern technologies to meet environmental goals and support regional and global environmental security.
The minister highlighted the competition’s role in encouraging creative ideas to tackle environmental challenges and commended the outstanding contributions from students and faculty, which supported sustainable development goals and reflected Bahraini talent and innovation.
During the meeting, the competition results were reviewed, and the top three teams were honoured by the minister in recognition of their efforts. He noted the creative abilities of Bahraini youth in turning challenges into opportunities and the important role of educational institutions in supporting innovative and technical initiatives that equip future generations to face global challenges.
The competition attracted wide academic participation, with 21 teams from the University of Bahrain and Bahrain Polytechnic submitting proposals to reduce temperatures in public and open spaces. A panel of experts in environment and sustainable design evaluated the entries based on specific criteria.
First place was awarded to a team from the University of Bahrain, Professor Ahmed Yousif, Dr. AbdulWaheed Badar, and students Mohammed Ahmed, Suleiman Mudathir, Talal Mohammed, and Fahad Ahmed, for their solar-powered cooling project for Isa Town Market.
Second place went to another team from the University of Bahrain, students Zain Abdullah Al-Mahmeed, Jenan Raed, Mustafa Wael, Ibrahim Mohammed, Zain Abdullah, and Dr. Omaima Al Abbasi, for their project to cool the Hamad Town walkway using materials with cooling properties and wind-based solutions.
Third place was awarded to the team from the University of Bahrain, students Maya Mousa Al Zaini, Ibrahim Jameel, Jumana Hisham, and lecturer Moataz Tayseer Saleh, for their sustainable cooling proposal for Isa Town Market that uses a system to remove hot air from market corridors.
