Interactive Workshop Promotes Visual Impairment Awareness on International White Cane Day
The University of Bahrain held an interactive awareness workshop on Thursday, October 15, 2026, titled “How Do We Interact with People with Visual Impairments?” The event coincided with International White Cane Day, observed on October 15 each year.
The workshop covered several key topics, including etiquette when interacting with people with visual impairments, the proper ways to offer assistance and guidance, and the role of the white cane in promoting independence. It also featured a hands-on demonstration of Braille writing and reading tools. Braille is a tactile reading and writing system used by people who are blind or have low vision. Participants then tried out the tools themselves to learn how they are used.
The workshop was led by Ali Mohamed Haji, General Manager of the Friendship Society for the Blind and a goalball coach.
The initiative was organized by the Mohammed Jaber Al-Ansari College for Teachers at the University of Bahrain. It reflects the College’s commitment to raising public awareness of visual impairment, fostering a culture of inclusion, and supporting practices that help create a more inclusive university learning environment.
