Supporting Lifelong Learning Through Public Events and Workshops
Overview
The University of Bahrain actively promotes lifelong learning and open knowledge exchange through a diverse range of public workshops, lectures, and academic events held throughout the 2023–2024 academic year. These activities, organized in collaboration with national and international partners, reflect the University’s strong commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education)—particularly Indicator 4.3.2, which emphasizes providing equitable access to quality education and learning opportunities for all.
More than 140 public events were conducted across various disciplines, including science, engineering, business, education, health, law, and the arts. Each activity was open to students, faculty, professionals, and members of the wider community, fostering inclusive participation and community engagement. Workshops covered themes such as academic writing, research ethics, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, sustainable development, environmental innovation, and cultural preservation.
In addition to thematic diversity, the events featured local experts, international scholars, and industry professionals, ensuring a rich exchange of knowledge and practical insights aligned with global and national development priorities. Major highlights included the 6th Sustainability and Resilience Conference, the International Conference on Sustaining Heritage (ICSH 2024), the Future Leaders Workshop, and numerous professional development seminars supporting students’ readiness for the labor market.
Through these continuous initiatives, the University of Bahrain reinforces its role as a national hub for public learning and professional growth, empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to Bahrain’s knowledge economy and sustainable future.

Lifelong Learning for All: UOB’s Annual Public Workshops and Training Programs
In alignment with SDG 4.3.2 – Public Events (Lifelong Learning), the Career Counselling Office at the University of Bahrain organized its annual series of free, public workshops and training sessions during the academic year 2023–2024. These initiatives, held every academic year, were open to all and aimed to enhance participants’ professional development and career readiness by providing them with essential knowledge in workplace ethics, internship strategies, and employability skills to support a successful transition into the job market.

Conducted in collaboration with Training Plus Institute, and presented by Ms. Ahlam Oun from General Assembly, this session emphasized ethical behavior, professionalism, and integrity as foundational values in the workplace. (Held on 24 June 2024)
- Work Ethics Workshop – Colleges of Engineering and Science
Delivered by Ms. Reem Mearaj from General Assembly, this workshop focused on developing a strong work ethic and understanding employer expectations, helping students strengthen their professional conduct. (Held on 26 June 2024)
- Create Your Career Opportunity Workshop
Presented by Mrs. Ameera Mayoof from the Career Counselling Office, this interactive session titled “Strategies to Maximize the Benefits of Internships or University Students” guided participants on how to effectively utilize internship opportunities for career advancement. (Held on 30 September 2024)
- Work Ethics Workshop – In collaboration with Training Plus Institute
This comprehensive workshop series aimed to reinforce the importance of workplace ethics and professional values among students across different colleges, preparing them for future employment challenges.
- Preparing Students for the Job Market
A special session delivered by Mr. Khalid Jalal, Senior Group ICT Manager at GARMCO, highlighting current job market trends, essential ICT competencies, and practical strategies for university graduates seeking to enter the workforce.
Through these initiatives, the University of Bahrain continues to empower its students by bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application, fostering a culture of professionalism, lifelong learning, and sustainable career growth.

UNDP and University of Bahrain Advance Human Rights Education through Business and Human Rights Workshop
On May 21, 2024, the University of Bahrain (UoB), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Bahrain, hosted a milestone workshop focused on integrating Business and Human Rights (BHR) principles into academic curricula. This initiative represents a significant advancement toward embedding human rights, ethical governance, and sustainable business practices into higher education in Bahrain.
Led by Dr. Harpreet Kaur, UNDP Asia-Pacific’s Business and Human Rights Specialist, the workshop gathered faculty members from UoB’s Law and Business departments to explore how academia can drive the BHR agenda. Participants examined the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and discussed how to embed their key pillars — Protect, Respect, and Remedy — into educational frameworks that promote corporate accountability and sustainability.
Interactive sessions encouraged participants to design potential courses such as “Human Rights in Supply Chain Management” and “Economics and Human Rights”, as well as experiential learning opportunities including internships, case studies, and community projects.
Building on UoB’s existing human rights initiatives, such as its Legal Aid Clinic which has engaged over 33,000 students since 2014 , the workshop laid the foundation for developing a dedicated BHR curriculum. This aligns with Bahrain’s vision of fostering ethical, responsible leadership and contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Through this collaboration, UoB continues to demonstrate its role as a national leader in education for human rights, sustainability, and global citizenship, preparing graduates to act as catalysts for positive change in the region.

University of Bahrain Expands Access to Sustainability Education through ESG Symposium
The College of Business Administration at the University of Bahrain (UoB) hosted a symposium titled “ESG Sustainability Reporting Practices”, demonstrating the University’s ongoing efforts to expand access to quality education in sustainability and responsible business practices.
Opening the event, Dr. Abdullah Khaled Al-Jalahma, Dean of the College, emphasized that integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into higher education is essential for preparing future leaders who can drive innovation and accountability in sustainable development.
The symposium featured distinguished speakers from the financial and industrial sectors, including Salman Jassim Radhi, Sustainability Officer at the National Bank of Bahrain; Hussain Al-Hindi, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Bahrain Bourse; and Dr. Ali Fardan from Aluminum Bahrain (Alba). They shared insights on ESG reporting frameworks, corporate sustainability strategies, and practical achievements such as waste reduction and energy-efficiency initiatives.
By engaging students with industry professionals and real-world sustainability practices, the event enhanced access to applied learning in ESG and sustainability management—bridging classroom knowledge with practical business application.
Through this initiative, the University of Bahrain contributes to SDG 4.3.2 by providing inclusive, high-quality tertiary learning opportunities in sustainability education, supporting Bahrain’s transition toward a knowledge-based and sustainability-driven economy.
Advancing SDG 4 Through Public Lifelong Learning Platforms and Cross-Regional Knowledge Exchange
In 2024, the University of Bahrain advanced SDG 4.3.2 by hosting four major international conferences that expanded public access to lifelong learning and strengthened global knowledge exchange. These events addressed data analytics, sustainable Islamic finance, digital heritage preservation, and nature-based solutions, creating open learning platforms for academics, students, policymakers, and community stakeholders. Together, the conferences accepted 152 peer-reviewed papers, including 70 authored by University of Bahrain researchers, demonstrating strong institutional contribution to global scholarship. More than 700 participants engaged across the events, representing broad cross-regional participation from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America. Asia accounted for over half of all contributors, with strong representation from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the United States, and Canada also made notable contributions. By ensuring inclusive, publicly accessible academic engagement, the University of Bahrain significantly expanded lifelong-learning pathways and strengthened its global performance on SDG 4.
The 5th International Conference on Data Analytics for Business and Industry (ICDABI 2024)

CDABI 2024 served as an open, interdisciplinary platform that expanded public access to lifelong learning in data-driven innovation, AI-enabled analytics, and digital transformation. The conference enabled researchers, industry practitioners, and students to engage in accessible knowledge exchange on advanced analytics, intelligent decision systems, and data literacy—core competencies aligned with SDG 4’s focus on quality, future-ready education. As a premier international forum, ICDABI facilitated the sharing of emerging research, applied solutions, and global best practices across big data, predictive modelling, and business analytics. ICSH 2024 – Advancing Lifelong Learning Through Digital Innovation in Heritage Preservation

Overview
ICSH 2024 delivered an open public learning platform that equipped participants with emerging digital competencies in heritage preservation, directly supporting SDG 4.3 (lifelong learning) and SDG 17 (partnerships). The conference examined how AI, 3D modelling, immersive environments, and other digital tools can safeguard tangible and intangible heritage, widening public access to global research and skills in cultural preservation.
The event built on the success of its 2023 inaugural edition and continued to democratize knowledge by bringing together researchers, policymakers, anthropologists, cultural practitioners, and professionals from tourism, hospitality, and the creative industries. Through open sessions and interdisciplinary dialogue, the conference enabled the wider community—including students, graduates, and professionals—to engage with contemporary digital approaches for sustaining heritage, arts, and cultural performance.
ICSH 2024 strengthened national and international collaboration by convening experts and institutions working on innovative conservation strategies, supporting SDG-aligned priorities related to sustainable communities, economic growth, and cross-sector partnerships. The programme highlighted practical digital methods for representing, documenting, and revitalizing cultural heritage, while showcasing case studies and success stories that encourage public participation and continuous learning.
By offering an inclusive and multicultural platform accessible to a broad public audience, the conference fostered lifelong learning on topics spanning architecture, design, fine arts, folklore, music, language, and digital heritage. It provided a sustainable forum for skill-building, professional enrichment, and community engagement, reinforcing the national effort to preserve heritage through innovation.

SRC 2024 – Advancing Lifelong Learning on Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainability and Resilience

Overview
SRC 2024 strengthened public lifelong learning by offering open plenaries and discussions on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation, environmental resilience, and sustainable development. The conference supported SDG 4.3 by expanding community access to current sustainability science and promoted cross-sector collaboration aligned with SDG 17.
Hosted by the University of Bahrain, the sixth edition of the Sustainability and Resilience Conference provided an accessible platform for researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and community actors to engage with emerging NBS approaches. The event bridged academic knowledge with real-world applications, highlighting how natural ecosystems and green transitions can be integrated into industrial and developmental systems.
Public sessions showcased global case studies, technical insights, and practical tools that enhance community understanding of low-carbon transitions and climate-responsive design. Seven thematic tracks offered an interdisciplinary learning experience, enabling participants—including students, graduates, and professionals—to acquire updated knowledge on trends, challenges, and opportunities in applying NBS across sectors.

The NSSA Space Apps Challenge 2024
The National Space Science Agency (NSSA) held the seventh Space Apps Challenge, supervised by NASA and open to the public. The in-person hackathon took place on October 5–6 at the University of Bahrain (Sakhir Campus) and Bahrain Polytechnic (Isa Town Campus). Participants of all ages, programmers, designers, scientists, and enthusiasts, collaborated to create innovative solutions using NASA’s open space data. The event promotes innovation, education, and creativity, connecting Bahrain to a global network of over 15 space agencies and thousands of participants worldwide.
Huawei ICT Competition

The 6th edition of “Micro Shabab” Forum
The sixth Youth Entrepreneurship Forum, “Micro Shabab,” was held from October 1-3, 2024, at the University of Bahrain under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Organized by the Future Society for Youth, the public event featured lectures and interactive sessions on business identity, financial planning, and AI’s role in entrepreneurship. It provided a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to connect with experts and investors, fostering innovation and supporting the development of new projects for the community.

Micro Water Desalination Forum: Modern Trends and Practices
The University of Bahrain hosted the second edition of the Micro Forum for Desalination: Modern Trends and Practices on October 17, 2024, at the University’s e-Learning Center in Sakhir. Organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering, the forum brought together leading experts and practitioners from the local and regional desalination industry to discuss innovative and sustainable solutions to sector challenges. The event was open to the public, promoting inclusive access to scientific knowledge and lifelong learning opportunities while supporting research collaboration and advancing Bahrain’s role in addressing water sustainability challenges.

Future Leaders Workshop
The Deanship of Students’ Affairs has launched “Preparing Future Leaders,” a public workshop series for the 2024/2025 academic year. The program began with a session titled “We are held accountable for what we don’t say,” presented by Mr. Osama AL Sayed. It aims to develop a conscious generation equipped with essential managerial and leadership skills to contribute to the nation’s progress. The series includes five workshops in the first semester focused on student development and five more in the second semester for advanced training, all open to the university community.

Song Performance
The Deanship of Student Affairs at the University of Bahrain presented a public singing performance titled “Masterpieces of the artist Abdulmajid Abdullah.” The event, part of the university’s music club activities, featured student Badr al-Anzi and was open for the wider community to enjoy.

Celebrating National Tree Week
In support of Bahrain’s carbon neutrality initiatives and National Tree Week, the University of Bahrain President, Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al Ansari, alongside university officials, led a tree-planting event on campus. This public initiative supports the national afforestation plan, which aims to plant 3.6 million trees by 2035, aligning with the Kingdom’s climate commitments. The activity was open for community participation.

Confucius Institute’s Open Day Event
The Confucius Institute at the University of Bahrain held a public Open Day to introduce attendees to the Chinese language and culture. The event featured a series of engaging cultural activities, providing the community with an opportunity to learn about the Institute’s programs and experience Chinese traditions.

Induction Lecture on Safety in Emergency Evacuations
The University of Bahrain, in cooperation with the General Directorate of Civil Defense, held a public induction lecture for its staff on November 24, 2024. The session focused on the foundations and procedures for safely evacuating buildings during emergencies. This lecture served as preparation for upcoming practical evacuation training exercises to be held at the university’s Sakhir and Salmaniyah campuses and was open to all academic and administrative members.

Conference “Education based on the Foundations of Prophetic Teachings”
The Bahrain Teachers College at the University of Bahrain recently held its third annual student conference, titled “Education based on the Foundations of Prophetic Teachings.” The event featured 80 research papers and aimed to enhance understanding of prophetic values and their application in modern educational practices. It was attended by faculty members, students, and was open to the wider academic community.

Yunus Emre Institute Participation in University of Bahrain National Day Celebrations
The University of Bahrain hosted its National Day Celebrations, featuring a wide range of public cultural and educational activities open to the wider community. As part of the event, the Yunus Emre Institute participated by setting up a cultural booth showcasing Turkish arts, traditions, and educational materials.
A professional ebru (traditional Turkish marbling art) artist was invited from Türkiye to conduct live demonstrations and hands-on workshops, offering attendees particularly students and community visitors—an opportunity to learn about the history, techniques, and cultural significance of this art form. The booth also featured informational resources about the Institute’s cultural and educational programs, as well as samples of Turkish and Bahraini sweets to encourage cultural exchange.
This activity provided open, accessible learning experiences for the public, promoting cultural literacy, artistic skills, and cross-cultural understanding—core dimensions of lifelong learning under SDG 4.3.2.

Calligraphy Art Exhibition and Workshops (April 2024)
The University of Bahrain, in cooperation with the Yunus Emre Institute, organized a public Calligraphy Art Exhibition featuring the works of Mr. Said Kasimoğlu, Head of the Arts and Handicrafts Department at IRCICA. The exhibition opened on 22 April 2024 and remained accessible to visitors until 28 April 2024, providing the university community and the public with free access to a cultural and educational event.
The exhibition showcased 20 calligraphy artworks, highlighting the artistic traditions of Turkish and Ottoman calligraphy rooted in Arabic script. As part of the program, Mr. Kasimoğlu delivered a public lecture on the history, aesthetics, and cultural significance of calligraphy, followed by a hands-on workshop where participants explored basic techniques and artistic concepts.
This open, skill-building activity promoted lifelong learning, cultural appreciation, and creative engagement, aligning with the requirements of SDG 4.3.2.

International Day for Cultural Diversity (23 May 2024)
The University of Bahrain organized the International Day for Cultural Diversity on 23 May 2024, bringing together international cultural institutes and the university community to promote understanding of global cultures. The Yunus Emre Institute participated by presenting educational and cultural materials related to Türkiye and offering samples of traditional Turkish cuisine.
The event was open to all students, faculty, and staff, providing a free learning opportunity to explore cultural heritage, language, arts, and traditions through direct engagement. By creating an inclusive platform for cultural and educational exchange, the event supported community-wide lifelong learning and strengthened intercultural awareness, meeting the requirements of SDG 4.3.2.
