Decision to Form the Sustainability Committee at the University of Bahrain – No. (72) of 2025 to institutionalize and strengthen the University’s commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. By aligning with global sustainability goals (SDGs) and integrating them into the University’s strategy, the decision aims to foster responsible resource management, reduce the University’s environmental impact, and enhance its position in global sustainability rankings.
The committee provides a structured governance framework to coordinate efforts, measure progress, and promote a culture of sustainability across the campus community.

First: Committee Formation
A Sustainability Committee is formed at the University of Bahrain, chaired by
Dr. Mazen Mohammed Ali (Dean of the College of Information Technology), and comprising
12 members from various colleges and departments, including faculty members, administrative
staff, and a student representative.
Second: Committee Responsibilities
The committee is tasked with the following:
- Developing a comprehensive governance framework for environmental, social, and economic initiatives aligned with the University’s vision and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Integrating sustainability goals into the University’s strategy and developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Monitoring resource consumption (energy, water, waste) and promoting green practices across campus.
- Measuring and reducing the University’s carbon footprint and preparing periodic reports.
- Proposing innovative financing models for sustainability initiatives to ensure continuity, reduce reliance on government funding, and diversify support sources.
- Aligning initiatives with Social Return on Investment (SROI) objectives to support long-term funding justification.
- Promoting a culture of sustainability within the University community through awareness campaigns, student-led initiatives, and media engagement.
- Enhancing the University’s ranking in global sustainability indices, such as UI GreenMetric, THE Impact Rankings, and QS Sustainability Rankings, in coordination with the University Rankings Committee.
Third: Committee Term
The committee’s term shall be one year from the date of issuance of this decision.
Fourth: Reporting
The committee shall submit two progress reports annually (in October and March) to the
President of the University via the official committee email address.
Fifth: Implementation
This decision shall take effect from the date of issuance and shall be implemented by all
relevant parties within the University.
