The University of Bahrain won the Best Pavilion Award in the Second Educational Agricultural Exhibition in the universities category.

The exhibition was organized by the Bahrain Training Institute under the slogan “Sustainable Agriculture Protects the Earth and Preserves Life,” and was held under the patronage of the Minister of Education, Dr. Majid bin Ali Al-Nuaimi, during the period of December 5–7, 2017.

The President of the University of Bahrain, Professor Riyad Yousif Hamzah, congratulated the university on this achievement, saying: “The University of Bahrain has always participated in distinguished events of an educational and awareness nature, especially in agricultural exhibitions, as evidence of the Department of Life Sciences’ interest in the agricultural field.” He emphasized that this interest stems from the national university’s mission to produce and disseminate knowledge in society.

For his part, the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Helou, stated that the University of Bahrain was keen to actively participate in this exhibition to reflect the scientific and technical level that represents the university. He praised the participation committee and the students who contributed to making the University of Bahrain’s pavilion worthy of winning first place in the universities category.

The Chairperson of the exhibition’s organizing committee, Professor of Plant Physiology and Tissue Culture in the Department of Life Sciences, Dr. Thuraya Abdulrahman Al-Mansoori, pointed to the broad participation of students in the exhibition and their interest in the scientific experiments provided by the University of Bahrain in its pavilion, which allowed them to try them personally. These included distinguishing between plant and animal cells by viewing them under a microscope and identifying symptoms of nutrient deficiencies in plants.

Dr. Al-Mansoori also gave a lecture at the exhibition about the use of plant tissue culture technology for the sustainable cultivation of palm trees in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The University of Bahrain’s pavilion at the exhibition included an agricultural nursery, where the university team showcased a number of plants and demonstrated the effects of mineral deficiencies on plant growth and easy methods of plant propagation. This allowed exhibition visitors to try self-planting indoor plants themselves, as well as to take home the plants they participated in cultivating to monitor their growth stages at home.
