Tree-planting initiative launched at UoB to promote environmental sustainability
A tree-planting initiative was launched at the University of Bahrain as part of national efforts to promote environmental sustainability and expand green spaces across the Kingdom.
The inauguration was attended by Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary General of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD); Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al Ansari, President of the University of Bahrain; Azzam Moutragi, Chief Executive Officer of Trafco Group; representatives from Saudi Arabia’s Net Zero company; and several officials.
The event included the planting of 50 Millingtonia hortensis, supported by Trafco Group, within the framework of public-private cooperation to promote environmental awareness, encourage tree planting, and conserve natural resources.
Students, faculty, and administrative members of the University of Bahrain participated in the activity, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of increasing green areas to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change effects.
Shaikha Maram bint Isa underscored that the national afforestation campaign reflects Bahrain’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through initiatives that enhance quality of life and expand green spaces. She emphasised that these efforts form part of a comprehensive national vision that prioritises the environment and promotes community engagement, particularly among youth.
Dr. Al Ansari expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting its alignment with the university’s efforts to strengthen environmental awareness among students and encourage participation in community and sustainability programmes.
Moutragi commended the initiative, highlighting Trafco Group’s commitment to social responsibility and its support for national environmental sustainability projects. He underscored that cooperation between educational institutions and government entities represents an effective model for advancing green development in the Kingdom.
The campaign forms part of Bahrain’s efforts to implement Bahrain Vision 2030, which aims to balance economic growth with environmental protection and promote sustainability as a strategic national objective.
