University of Bahrain Academic Elected to International Astronomical Union (IAU)

Dr. Abdulmonem Isa Al Shino, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the College of Science, University of Bahrain, has recently been elected to the International Astronomical Union (IAU), becoming the first Bahraini academic to become a member in this global scientific forum, which brings together an elite group of professional astronomers.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is a globally recognized scientific body dedicated to establishing astronomical standards and naming celestial bodies. It serves as the collective voice of the worldwide scientific community in the field of astronomy. Its role extends beyond purely academic matters to serve as a scientific authority that helps unify methodologies for studying the universe and stars according to precise scientific principles, transcending geographical and political boundaries.

The IAU’s responsibilities include advancing scientific research and education, naming planets, stars, and celestial bodies, and coordinating major international research projects aimed at unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos. In addition to its scientific and technical functions, it also strives to promote global development, disseminate scientific literacy, and stimulate technological innovation.

The IAU is the highest global authority in the fields of astronomy and space science. Founded in 1919, this long-standing institution aims to safeguard and advance astronomy through joint international cooperation.

Dr. Al-Shino earned his PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Birmingham in 2010, specializing in the evolution of optical and X-ray properties of galaxy clusters. He has participated as a researcher and member in major international astronomical collaborations and projects in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to which he has submitted numerous research and scientific proposals.

He has published peer-reviewed scientific papers in specialized international journals in the fields of astrophysics, galaxy science, and galaxy clusters, and has a distinguished record of scientific, research, educational, and engineering activities related to astronomy spanning many years.

Dr. Al-Shino has contributed to the advancement of astronomical education in the Kingdom of Bahrain by designing and implementing a comprehensive minor program in astronomy for science students, in collaboration with several faculty members in the Department of Physics at the University of Bahrain. He has also designed and taught astronomy courses for non-specialists, with the aim of promoting scientific and astronomical literacy within the community.
