The University of Bahrain (UoB), in partnership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), successfully organized and hosted the 8th IET Smart Cities Symposium from 1 to 3 December 2024, bringing together international experts and stakeholders to explore future-ready solutions for sustainable and intelligent urban development.
The annual international symposium provided a structured platform for dialogue among government entities, policymakers, professional engineering organizations, industry leaders, private-sector innovators, academic researchers, and civil-society representatives. Participants included urban planning authorities, national ministries, regulatory bodies, global professional networks, smart-technology firms, ICT providers, engineers, faculty members, postgraduate students, and sustainability specialists.
The symposium featured keynote addresses by international experts, panel discussions on smart-city resilience, low-carbon innovation, energy transition, and AI-enabled urban systems, in addition to technical research sessions that facilitated the exchange of global best practices. Open and publicly accessible sessions enabled students, graduates, and community members to engage directly with emerging knowledge and innovation.
The 2024 edition achieved wide international and regional participation, with attendees from the GCC and the Middle East, Europe through IET networks, and Asia, reflecting the symposium’s role as a global platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnership building in the field of smart and sustainable urban development.
