University of Bahrain SPE Student Chapter and Bapco Energies Organize Knowledge-Sharing Session on Refinery Economics and Optimization
As part of their commitment to bridging academia and industry, the University of Bahrain Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter, in collaboration with Bapco Energies, organized a knowledge-sharing session titled “Fundamentals of Refinery Economics and Optimization” during the academic year 2024–2025.
The session was presented by Marda BuAli, who introduced participants to the fundamentals of refinery economics and the factors that influence value creation across the refining industry. The session aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the refining value chain, provide insights into the economic impact of crude oil quality, and develop awareness of the operational and strategic decisions that drive refinery performance.
Participants explored the relationship between feedstock characteristics, refining processes, and product profitability, while gaining practical knowledge of refinery optimization techniques. The session highlighted a range of optimization strategies used within the industry, including process efficiency improvement, product yield maximization, cost reduction approaches, resource utilization optimization, and data-driven decision-making to enhance operational and economic performance.
The event provided a valuable platform for students to connect academic learning with real-world industry practices, strengthening their understanding of the technical and economic challenges facing the energy sector. It also reflected the shared commitment of the University of Bahrain SPE Student Chapter and Bapco Energies to promoting professional development, industry engagement, and knowledge exchange for future petroleum and energy professionals.
