University of Bahrain Wins First Place in Awareness Category at “Garden Show”
The University of Bahrain’s pavilion won first place in the awareness category at the 12th Bahrain International Garden Show, which concluded yesterday (Sunday) at the Bahrain International Exhibition Center, out of 155 participants from various countries and both public and private sectors.
The exhibition was held under the gracious patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and supported by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of the King of Bahrain and Chairperson of the Advisory Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development.
Sheikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of the initiative, presented the first-place award to the representatives of the University of Bahrain.
Dr. Hashem Ahmed Al-Sayed, Dean of the College of Science and head of the coordinating committee for the university’s pavilion, expressed his pride in the win, stating that it adds to the university’s list of achievements and thanked all the entities that contributed to the distinguished appearance of the pavilion.
The University of Bahrain’s booth gained admiration from visitors, who praised its creative design, scientific content, and educational approach to raising awareness about Bahrain’s significant trees for both adults and children.
The exhibition was visited by thousands of people of different ages and nationalities over the past few days. Most visitors toured the University of Bahrain’s booth, which featured a hexagonal wooden tower with plants inside, with each side representing a tree commonly grown in Bahrain.
Dr. Fouad Mohammed Al-Ansari, Dean of the College of Engineering, explained the idea behind the booth, saying, “We managed to bring together several ideas to provide useful information to visitors. As we aim to present something new in each edition, we aligned with the exhibition’s theme, ‘Caring for Trees,’ through a prominent architectural design that offers indirect educational content via cultural competitions about the environment, irrigation, and care of each tree.”
Dr. Al-Ansari noted that the key strength of the booth this year was the collaborative team effort involving several departments to deliver a high-quality outcome over the three-day event, which is a source of pride for the university.
Mohammed Jassim BuHumaid, a student from the Department of Biology, explained how visitors benefit from the booth. He noted that the model consists of six sides, each representing one of Bahrain’s well-known trees: almond, sidra (lotus jujube), Indian cactus, lemon, citron, and mango. Each side featured a TV screen displaying information in the form of a quiz, with winners receiving a plant-based gift.
The booth also included a children’s section that taught tree pruning techniques through live demonstrations and presented exciting stories in both Arabic and English about trees.
This year, the University of Bahrain focused on tree care practices such as maintenance, pruning, harvesting, structural support, safe transport, treatment of insect and disease damage, and nutritional issues affecting trees.
The pavilion also aimed to educate the public on proper tree care methods, reflecting the university’s academic and research mission to serve the community.
The booth featured three main sections: the “Trees of Goodness” hexagonal model, the “Mother Tree” corner, and a corner for educating visitors on pruning techniques.
It is noteworthy that the University of Bahrain consistently secures a spot among the top three winners annually at this exhibition, which attracts thousands of visitors from Bahrain and abroad.
