UOB Advances 11 Positions in the Global University Sustainability Ranking – UI Green Metric
The University of Bahrain (UOB) has ranked first in the Kingdom of Bahrain and 280th globally in the 2025 UI Green Metric World University Rankings for Sustainability, out of 1,745 participating universities from 105 countries this year.
This achievement is a direct result of the national university’s strategic plans to enhance administrative and student-related aspects of sustainability and the preservation of natural resources.
The University of Bahrain distinguished itself notably in Education and Research, achieving a score of 97.22%, which reflects its performance in offering sustainability-related courses, funding sustainability research, published research outputs, organizing relevant events, and the proportion of activities dedicated to sustainability.
The university also achieved significant progress in Waste Management, with a score of 95.83%, reflecting its commitment to implementing practical strategies for handling waste on campus. The university excelled in applying effective methods for the sustainable disposal of various types of waste and in encouraging studies and research focused on sustainable waste management.
In Infrastructure, UOB scored 86.67%, excelling in areas such as green spaces on campus, the proportion of open areas, and the university’s budget allocated for sustainability initiatives. In Water Management, it scored 85%, demonstrating strength in water conservation programs, water recycling, and combating water pollution on campus.
Furthermore, the university made notable progress in Transportation, achieving a score of 72.92%. It placed great emphasis on reducing the carbon footprint on campus and works to provide a healthy environment that encourages students and staff to walk and move around the campus.
The university also seeks to achieve greater advancement in Energy and Climate Change, where it scored 41.67%, through the implementation of numerous projects in renewable energy. Notably, the university recently signed an agreement with the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) for a solar energy project on campus, which is expected to have a tangible environmental impact.
