UOB Secures Second Place in Gulf Robotics Challenge

A student team from the University of Bahrain has won second place at the 9th IET GCC Robotics Challenge. The online competition was organized for GCC students by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

The university’s students participated in the competition alongside 28 other teams from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. They presented an outstanding project for an AI-powered smart drone designed to monitor plant health and stress, titled “AeroDoctor.”

The project was developed by students: Mohammed Hussam Zainalddin, Fatima Salah Ahmed, and Yumna Rabee Yahya. It aims to address the problem of delays in detecting plant diseases and stress. Relying on traditional manual inspection can lead to losses of up to 30% of crops due to late diagnosis, negatively impacting farmers’ productivity and income.

The project’s concept is based on monitoring and analyzing environmental and climatic factors, detecting plant diseases, and mitigating their effects through a technological innovation: the smart drone.

The smart drone works to monitor and control plant stress factors, such as targeted irrigation based on environmental conditions, in addition to monitoring and controlling plant health through precise pesticide spraying. Images captured are analyzed using neural networks to classify diseases and accurately pinpoint the locations of infected areas.
