Overview
The Healthy University Initiative marks a transformative effort by the University of Bahrain (UoB) to implement the World Health Organization’s Health Promoting Universities framework, integrating physical, mental, and environmental health within a sustainable campus ecosystem.
Launched in May 2024 and continuing through 2025, the initiative aims to position UoB as a regional model for sustainable health promotion in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
At its core, the initiative established a Health Promoting University Executive Committee, comprising academic, clinical, and administrative members, tasked with embedding health and well-being principles into university policies, curricula, and daily operations.
Impact
- The program promotes healthy lifestyles among students and staff through workshops, health fairs, and educational programs on nutrition, mental health, and physical activity.
- It also enhances environmental health by improving campus sanitation, waste management, and access to green spaces—creating a safe and health-promoting environment.
- Through collaboration with local and international health partners, the initiative ensures a holistic, evidence-based approach to campus wellness and community engagement.
