University of Bahrain Introduces Academics to Disruptive Innovation in Classroom Activities

The Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership (UTEL) at the University of Bahrain organized an interactive online workshop on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, titled “Disruptive Innovation to Enhance Interaction in Classroom Activities.” During the workshop, academics from the University of Bahrain and other institutions were introduced to the concept of disruptive innovation, its characteristics, and methods for framing it to improve classroom activities and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

Disruptive innovation is a pattern of innovation that begins at the margins. It does not represent a radical change in the educational process but rather a partial or gradual shift that helps displace traditional solutions in teaching.

A key focus of the workshop was redesigning classroom activities to boost student participation, increase productivity, and strengthen students’ connection to real-world learning contexts.

Participants also explored a number of methods, ideas, and options available to faculty members to enrich classroom activities using partially enhanced teaching tools that have a positive impact on the educational process.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Raed Ebrahim Al-Jowder, a member of the UTEL, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering.
