It’s of great pleasure to welcome you to the University of Bahrain Central Academic Promotion Committee portal.  Through this portal, you will find all the needed information related to the UOB academic promotion.

Academic promotion for faculty members are associated with the main objectives for which the University of Bahrain was established. These objectives include spreading, developing, and devoting knowledge to community service. Academic promotion aims to raise the academic and research efficiency of the faculty member. The most important tasks of UoB Academic Promotion Committee include assessing the performance of faculty members for their overall scientific, research and teaching activities and taking part in university and community service, in accordance with the university’s academic standard criteria.

The University of Bahrain has FOUR classes for academic promotion. These are listed below:

  • Promotion from Teacher to Lecturer.
  • Promotion from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer.
  • Promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor
  • Promotion from Associate Professor to Professor.

Article (1)    These regulations shall be called the “Regulations of Academic Promotion for Faculty Members at the University of Bahrain.”

Article (2)   The provisions of these regulations shall apply to permanent and contract faculty members unless otherwise provided for.

Article (3)   The following words and phrases, wherever used in these regulations, shall have the meanings assigned to each, unless the context indicates otherwise:

  • Regulations:  Regulations of Academic Promotion for Faculty Members at the University of Bahrain.
  • University:  University of Bahrain.
  • University Council:  University of Bahrain Council.
  • College Council: The Council of the relevant college.
  • Department Council: The Council of the relevant department.
  • Central Committee: The Academic Promotion Committee for Faculty Members at the University.
  • College Committee: The Academic Promotion Committee of the college of the faculty member applying for promotion.
  • Department Committee: The Academic Promotion Committee of the department of the faculty members applying for promotion.
  • Temporary Department Committee: The committee formed by the Dean in consultation with the Head of the relevant department if the conditions for forming an Academic Promotion Committee in the department are not met.
Temporary College Committee:

The committee formed by the Vice-president in consultation with the Dean if the conditions for forming an Academic Promotion Committee in the college   are not met.

  • President: The President of the University of Bahrain.
  • Vice-president: The Vice-president for Academic Programs and Graduate Studies.
  • Dean: The Dean of the relevant college, or their equivalent.
  • Head of Department: The Head of the relevant department, or their equivalent.
  • Promotion Applicant: The faculty member applying for promotion.
  • Promotion File: The file submitted by the promotion applicant to the Head of the relevant department.
Publication Levels:

The relevant department council classifies refereed academic journals according to the classification contained in the table set forth in Article (29/A) of     these regulations. This shall take into account the scientific credibility of each.

Scientific Production:

Scientific research, books, patents, and supporting research activities.

Published Scientific Production:

Scientific production that has been fully published as referred to in Article (29/A) of these regulations.

Accepted for Publication Scientific Production:

Scientific production submitted to a refereed scientific journal and accepted for publication.

Single-authored Scientific Production:

The promotion applicant conducted his scientific production individually, without any collaboration with others.

Jointly-authored Scientific Production:

The promotion applicant conducted scientific production jointly with others.

Stages of the Application Process

Academic promotion at University of Bahrain is a process starts by the applicant, then the academic departments (with its associated committee/ council) , colleges (with its associated committee/ council), central promotion committee, and the University of Bahrain.

The promotions process at University of Bahrain is based on principles of equity, fairness and the recognition of an individual’s overall contribution as a member of academic staff. All applications will be reviewed against four criteria sets, as follows: The criteria for faculty promotion at the University of Bahrain include evaluating the performance of faculty members in the following three areas:

  1. Research.
  2. Education (Teaching and Academic Advising).
  3. University Services.
  4. Community Services.

Guidance on Applying For Promotion

Please note:
  • To find out which promotion(s) you can apply for, check the Academic Titles guidelines for your position. The specific criteria for each level of promotion are indeed listed as Schedules in the University of Bahrain Promotions Policy, along with all the other information you need to know before you apply.
  • Applications for promotion are open all the academic year (excluding for the regular academic breaks).
  • It is advisable for applicants to consult with their Head of Department well in advance of the due date, because applications need to be submitted to HoDs for comment before being delivered to other committees and councils by the due date.
  • Your promotion application is a significant piece of work – it will require a lot of planning to gather the evidence you need to support your application. Applicants should have a look through the current University of Bahrain policy as you plan your application.
  • The University of Bahrain Central Academic Committee is working hard to update (if any) all the needed information about promotion on the website.

  • For journals and classification of journals for promotion purposes, it is advisable to check for updates with the (Department Academic Promotion Committee). University of Bahrain Honorarium Payments for External Refereeing (Electronic Submission)

An honorarium is a small token payment intended to be a gesture of appreciation to an individual volunteering service to University of Bahrain for External Refereeing.  This is paid on a regular basis for external refereeing.  To speedup the transfer of the (Honorarium) to an external referee, please fill in the below (LIST-Form), and attach the needed information, as given on the form.  UNIVERSITY OF BAHRAIN: External Referee Honorarium Transfer and Tracking Sheet – used to confirm receipt and track individual recipient information.

Once External Referring is completed, it is required for external referees to fill in the below Online Form.

University of Bahrain Faculty Academic Promotion Application Form (Electronic Submission)

External refereeing is an important and integral part of the academic promotion process at University of Bahrain. Five external referees are invited to referee an application. Within this section, two online Forms/Lists (ENGLISH, ARABIC) have been allocated for external referee’s approvals by the Department, College, Central Promotion Committee.  Within this section, Faculty_Academic Promotion Application Form are to be filled online. External refereeing is an important and integral part of the academic promotion process at University of Bahrain. Five external referees are invited to referee an application. Important Notes to be Observed

Kindly, applicants for academic promotion are to be informed about the following:

University of Bahrain Council Decision No. 443/ 2016: Date: 30/06/2016

(In the case the result of refereeing the research is negative, the applicant shall submit the promotion file containing the scientific research and activities only.  The applicant must observe that research papers with evaluation less that “good” (<5) for the promotion to the rank of associate professor, and those papers with evaluation less than “very good” (<7) in the case of promotion to the rank of Professor, from the majority of referees (3 of 5) should not be resubmitted.   University of Bahrain Council Decision No. 443/ 2016.

University of Bahrain Council Decision No. 1882/ 2012: Date: 19/12/2012

For OPEN ACCESS electronics journals, they are accepted, provided:

  • The journal has a specialized editorial body.
  • The journal is issued by well-known specialized bodies, societies, or through well-known scientific institutions.

For publication in journals issued by University of Bahrain (papers or electronics), ONLY TWO articles are accepted to be used for promotion purposes. University of Bahrain Council Decision No. 1882/ 2012
