Activating E-Learning Platforms at UOB During the Study Suspension Period

 

Due to the current conditions, the University of Bahrain (UOB) has finished activating its e-learning platforms, and announced that Wednesday, 11th of March 2020, shall be the first official day for e-learning and interaction between students and their professors to benefit in the study suspension period.

The Director of the E-Learning Center at UOB, Dr. Fay Abdullah Al Khalifa, stated that the Microsoft Teams and Blackboard platforms offer the possibility to download the scientific material for the course and share it with the students registered in the course, as well as allowing communication between students and faculty members, whether through discussion rooms or the live broadcast provided by the platform.

Also, she confirmed that UOB started using the Blackboard platform since 2009 to download teaching materials and for communication between students and their professors, and this platform is available to be used for e-learning purposes along with the Microsoft Teams platform.

Furthermore, Dr. Fay Al Khalifa explained that at the current time, all theoretical courses can be offered through these two platforms, and theoretical courses are those courses that do not require laboratories, workshops or halls, indicating that these two platforms are linked to the student information management system to facilitate their use and handling.

For her part, the head of the Computer Engineering Department at the College of Information Technology, Dr. Aisha Fuad Bushager, said that she started presenting her lectures to her students using electronic platforms and described the experience as "wonderful," noting that the students "interacted with the new teaching method, which allows the professor to write on the whiteboard.", and that students can choose to "raise their hand" to inquire or question or participate and intervene," referring to the wide possibilities offered by e-learning with its advanced platforms.

UOB Employees Learn About Electronic Risks and How to Deal with Them

 

The employees of the University of Bahrain (UOB) learned about the most significant electronic risks and how to deal with them during a workshop entitled “Technical Information Security", which was organized by the Information Technology Center at UOB on Wednesday (19 February 2020) at the campus of Sakhir, in cooperation with the Administrative Training Office at the University and the Information and E-Government Authority.

The workshop was held for two consecutive days and in which about 120 administrators participated and discussed issues such as information security, types of electronic risks and how to deal with them, in addition to laws and regulations related to information security in the government sector.

Computer security official at the Information and E-Government Authority, Yousif Khaled Al-Maloud, stated: "Today, cyber-attacks have become more dangerous than ever and have introduced a new kind of wars known as electronic (cyber) wars, which may not require many weapons, but their destructive effects are enormous."

Also, he pointed out that hacking attempts can be caused by various motives such as blackmail, political goals, or destructive motives, which threat level can be determined by the type of hacking and the number of attempts, stressing that the awareness of employees would lead to the failure of 90% of electronic hacking attempts.

Moreover, Al-Maloud indicated that "the Information and E-Government Authority gives utmost importance to spreading awareness on the dangers of electronic threats and their preventions" noting that "the Authority has undertaken several initiatives to raise awareness of information security, one of which is "Trust "program, which has benefited more than four thousand government employees since its launch in 2016.”

Furthermore, Al-Maloud pointed out that information security is determined through setting policies and procedures, creating modern technologies, and raising awareness of the importance and methods of dealing with electronic threats, noting the elements of information security include confidentiality, integrity, and availability that is done through backup.

During his speech, the computer security administrator discussed types of risks, such as viruses, electronic worms, hacking methods by backdoors, trojans, spyware, adware, keyboard viruses, and hacking through the information available on social media.

Also, he talked about important measures to protect information security, and concluded his speech by reviewing regulations related to information technology crimes, such as illegal entry, data destruction, data interception, threats and extortion, forgery, and fraud, in addition to noting crimes related to the protection of the State’s information and documents.

Dr. Hamzah: Selling Books Electronically Through the National Portal was a Successful Experience

In cooperation with the Information and eGovernment Authority, President of the University of Bahrain (UOB) Dr. Riyad Yousif Hamzah confirmed that the University is looking forward to developing more electronic services for students, noting the positive impact of such projects in promoting digital transformation at the University.

As the national portal (bahrain.bh) provides several services to university students, including online admission, payment of fees, and updating data, and the portal has recently added textbooks purchase service.

Furthermore, the University President added that "The figures of the E-Government Authority indicate that the rate of use of textbooks purchase service by UOB students through the National Portal reached 100% last semester, and the number of visits of the portal reached more than 34 thousand visits by the end of the year 2019, with 5594 financial transactions done”, stressing that "these numbers reflect the success of the service and students’ positive interaction with it."

Also, he indicated that "the University seeks to develop all of its services electronically within its strategy for digital transformation to upgrade the electronic programs and services offered by the University to its members," noting that " it is known that electronic transactions reduce costs and effort and shorten the time as well."

Moreover, the University President thanked the Information and E-Government Authority and its technical team for their important role in promoting digital transformation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and for their cooperation with the University in implementing several pioneering projects at the level of the Kingdom and the region.

A Workshop at UOB Discusses Innovation in Interactive E-Learning

Dr. Fay Al Khalifa: The University Is Looking to Expand Its Cooperation With "Blackboard"

Participants in a workshop organized by the E-Learning Center at the University of Bahrain (UOB) confirmed that the upgraded blackboard platform would help in further innovation in interactive education, noting that they have made great use of the platform in the past years.

The Director of the E-Learning Center, Dr. Fay Bint Abdullah Al Khalifa, explained that the blackboard system is an information system for education management, following up students and monitoring the efficiency of the educational process in the educational institution.”

Furthermore, she pointed out that "this system provides great opportunities for students to be in touch with the course outside class, anywhere and at any time, and that is through various tools to view the content of the educational material of the course and to easily interact with it, in addition to communicating electronically with the professor and the rest of the students registered in same the course. "

The workshop was presented by a team from the Blackboard, in which about 30 employees and professors at the University participated, and it explored the options offered by the system to promote intergated learning and innovation in the teaching and learning process.

According to Dr. Fay Al Khalifa, the University is offering 900 integrated courses on the Blackboard learning platform, from which about 12,000 students from the University’s nine colleges can benefit, confirming the University’s endeavor to expand the experience of cooperation with the international platform (Blackboard).

Moreover, the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering Dr. Bader Darwish Al-Mannai also participated in the workshop and stated that “The blackboard system facilitates several operations, such as communication, informing students about assignments evaluations and allowing them to follow up their course of study in the course,” stressing that “The applications and tools that the system provides facilitate the teaching and learning process for students and professors alike.

Also, Hanan Mubarak Albuflasa, who is a member of the faculty in the Physics Department at the College of Science, stated that Blackboard strengthens the University’s efforts towards digital transformation and improves the education process, especially in light of the steady increase in the number of students.

Furthermore, she stated that " According to what the lecturers reviewed in the workshop, the upgraded version of the Blackboard system shall help in effectively developing and updating the course material, and increasing communication between the parties to the educational process."

Newly Assigned Academics at UOB Get Training on Methods of Examination Questions Formulation

As part of the programs organized by the Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership (UTEL) in the University of Bahrain (UOB) in cooperation with the Higher Education Academy at the United Kingdom, UTEL held an intensive training workshop for newly assigned professors at the University at the e-learning center on the University’s campus in Sakhir, in which a number of academics at UOB participated.

The Assistant Professor in the Information Systems Department at the College of Information Technology and the coordinator of the New Professors Program at the University, Dr. Amal Mohammed Al-Rayes, stated that “The workshop is held annually and is devoted to faculty members who are newly teaching at UOB, whether they are new to teaching or newly assigned in UOB.”

Furthermore, she explained that the workshop is held over two days under the title “New to Teaching in Bahrain (NTB)”, which reviews evaluation and feedback. On the first day, it addressed a detailed presentation of the evaluation process, which includes group evaluation and formative evaluation, in addition to a review of methods of designing calendars within constructive conformity and according to quality standards, and she stated that "We address methods of designing courses and exam questions in line with the requirements of UOB and according to quality standards." While on the second day, it addressed feedback, confirming that "There was a great interaction from the workshop participants, which reflects their interest in developing their professional skills. "

While the Assistant Professor at the College of Law, Dr. Arwa Abdullatif Al-Sheikh, who is also one of the participants in the workshop, confirmed that she benefited from the UTEL’s workshops, stating: "I noticed a clear change in my teaching style, and my methods of communicating information to students," noting that she is participating for the second time in this workshop after the first that was held in last September 2019, pointing to her acquisition of modern teaching and evaluation skills and new methods of formulating exam questions.

The President of the University of Bahrain (UOB), Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, stated that the University strongly supports active participation in Bahrain Sports Day, because of the effects of regular sport on the health of the individual, and consequently on his giving and his physical, psychological, and mental health.

Furthermore, the University President added that "The nature of business and daily life leads us to a lack of movement and making muscle effort consistent with mental effort, and such changes have led to the emergence of many negative health phenomena in societies around the world, as sport (along with a balanced diet) is one of the main reasons of enjoying a healthy life. "

Also, Prof. Hamzah said that the University’s response comes in response to the directives of the Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, with the support of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the representative of His Majesty the King for Charitable Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and Chairman of the Bahrain Olympic Committee.

The University has prepared many activities on this day, to encourage the practice of sports among its members, as the sports day program includes walking, volleyball, football, table tennis, athletics and long jump, and tires pushing speed races, in addition to other sports.

Participants at "Quality 2020" At UOB Discuss the Challenges of Higher Education

With the participation of more than seventy professors and experts specialized in the field of quality of education from Arab and foreign universities and institutions, participants in the "Quality Assurance 2020" forum, which was organized by the Quality Assurance and Academic Accreditation Center at the University of Bahrain (UOB) on Thursday (6 February 2020), discussed the most important challenges and difficulties facing the future of higher education organizations, and global technological and technological variables.

The participants at the Forum, which was held at the Sofitel Hotel, discussed future challenges on the quality of educational outcomes and the challenges of the labor market, based on the changing nature of educational qualifications.

While the Forum’s speakers presented working papers and practical experiences in various higher education quality organizations in the Arab, European, Asian and African regions.

During the forum, Dr. Susanna Karakhanyan, President of INQAAHE Foundation, spoke about the present and future of international accreditation for academic programs, while the Director of the Higher Education Department at the Education and Training Quality Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Lobna Al Khalifa, discussed the importance of learning based on evaluation results as a tool to enhance teaching. Also, the President of the Arab Computer Society, Dr. Ramzi Al-Harati, discussed how to meet the challenges of assessing student learning outcomes, while Business Development Manager (RimaOne) Axel Borschbach spoke about the importance of data management in higher education.

Moreover, the Dean and Associate Professor of the College of Nursing at Sultan Qaboos University Dr. Omar Al-Rawajfa demonstrated an expirment, as well as the Director of Quality Assurance and Academic Accreditation at Sultan Qaboos University Dr. Khaled Al-Omari, who showed the experience of academic accreditation as an opportunity to improve learning assessment.

The Forum was attended by the President of UOB, Dr. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, and the CEO of the Education and Training Quality Authority, Dr. Jawaher Shaheen Al-Mudhahki, and the Forum’s works included a panel discussion on “The Value Of Expert Participation In The Development Of Learning Quality”, which involved the President of INQAAHE Dr. Susanna Karakhanyan, Director, Academic Development & Commericial Initiative at Bahrain Polytechnic Eman Janahi, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce Basim Al-Saie, and it was supervised by the Director of the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Center at UOB, Dr. Luisella Balbis.

In cooperation with the Academy of Higher Education in Britain, the Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership (UTEL) at the University of Bahrain (UOB) held the fourth edition of the “Graduation Brief Preparation” workshop at the E-Learning Center in the University Sakhir Campus for members of the Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD), in which a number of academics from the (UOB) participated.

In this respect, Assistant Professor and Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering Dr. Raed Ebrahim Al-Jowder stated that "The workshop - in which several academics from various colleges of the University will participate - will end with the preparation of a graduation research project, which will be subject to evaluation by faculty members, based on the level of activities and events in support of the learning and teaching processes in higher education institutes. " Pointing out that it is part of the systematic efforts made by the University in the process of continuous development of the academic staff through UTEL, and that after the evaluation process, the participant will be awarded an Associate in Academic Practices certificate from the Academy of Higher Education in Britain.

It is worth noting that the CPD program, which is offered by UTEL at UOB, is part of the University’s initiatives for faculty development since 2006, as well as the implementation of the University’s strategic plan. Moreover, Al-Jowder pointed out that the workshop will last for a week and it aims to instruct faculty members on the ways and methods of preparing the graduation brief, and the basic skills required for preparing articles of reflective thinking.

The Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership (UTEL) at the University of Bahrain (UOB) started a week of intensive workshops for faculty members at the E-Learning Center on the University's campus in Sakhir, where a number of academics from various colleges of the University participate in the Unit's workshops within the program of the Certificate of Academic Practice, which is under the umbrella of international partnership with the Academy of Higher Education in the United Kingdom, which are the Post Graduate Certificate for Academic Practice Program (PCAP), the Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD), the Flipped Learning program, and the Team Education Program, in addition to a workshop to learn about the latest developments in teaching in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Hayat Abdullah Yousif, stated that “Participants in PCAP will be able to design and select the best student activities that are most appropriate with the requirements of the curricula and their outputs, in addition to learning about students’ evaluation methods, exams planning methods, and questions formulation technique consistent with the level of students and the nature of the courses.”

Furthermore, she indicated that the annual intensive workshop provides faculty members with practical and applied examples of the basic principles that would lead to achieving the objectives of the workshop, and which ultimately aim to raise the quality of education in the University.

It is worth noting that PCAP, which is offered by UTEL at UOB, is part of the University’s initiatives for faculty development since 2006, as well as the implementation of the University’s strategic plan.

UOB Students Participate in the Gulf Theater Festival in Jeddah

 

With the participation of nine universities from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in addition to the University of Bahrain (UOB) and universities from the State of Kuwait and the Sultanate of Oman, students of the Theater Club at UOB participated in the fifth Gulf Theater Festival for Universities and Higher Education Institutions in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, during the period from the 2nd to the 7th of February 2020.

The students of UOB performed a theatrical work entitled "Al-Qadem", directed by the Artist Ebrahim Khalfan, written by Waleed Ikhlasi, and performed by the students: Ali Hussain, Hamad Al-Haddad, Ali Hassan and Ja’afar Al-Bannai.

In this context, the Dean of Student Affairs at UOB, Dr. Fatima Mohammed Al-Malki, who headed the student delegation, stated: “The Theater Festival for Universities of the Arab Gulf states provides an opportunity for students in these universities to exchange experiences and expertise, and represents an opportunity for university students to participate and show their experiences, ideas and expertise.". Furthermore, Dr. Al-Malki expressed her happiness at the participation of UOB students in the Theater Festival.

Participants in the Festival will perform 12 student plays, practical seminars, theater acting training courses, and a mask-making course.

UOB delegation consisted of Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Fatima Al-Malki, Instructor of Theater Club Shaikha Bukamal, the theatrical work director Ebrahim Khalfan, and club students Ali Hussain, Hamad Al-Haddad, Ali Hassan, and Ja’afar Al-Bannai.
