UOB’s Board of Trustees Holds Its Sixteenth Regular Session Meeting

Commending the Steps Taken by The University To Continue Education In Light Of The Pandemic

Under the chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Bahrain (UOB), the University’s Board of Trustees held today a meeting for its sixteenth regular session on Wednesday (09 December 2020), in the presence of Her Excellency Mrs. Faiqa bint Saeed AlSaleh, Minister of Health, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed bin Zayed Al-Zayed President of the Civil Service Bureau, His Excellency Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, President of UOB, Chief Executive Officer of the Urban Planning and Development Authority, Her Excellency Mrs. Nouf Abdulrahman Jamsheer, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Resources and Services, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Mubarak Juma’a, Assistant Secretary-General for Evaluation and Accreditation at the General Secretariat of the Higher Education Council, Her Excellency Dr. Mona Mohammed Al-Balushi, Her Excellency Sheikha Tifla bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, and His Excellency Dr. Mansour Muhammad Sarhan.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Council congratulated the students of the Kingdom of Bahrain for achieving an unprecedented educational achievement in the results of the TIMSS 2019 tests, which were recently announced by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). As these exams witnessed the participation of many countries that fulfilled the conditions of participation that require meeting many of the precise conditions and standards, and thus the performance of Bahrain's students at the school level moved from low-medium to medium-high at performance, in accordance with international standards.

After that, the Council started the agenda, where it approved the previous agenda, and viewed a report submitted by the University President, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, on the implementation of the decisions of the previous meeting. Also, the Council reviewed the presentation made by the University President on the progress of work and achievement, what the university had done for the continuity of education in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and what measures had been taken to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the University. The Council commended the administration of UOB on e-learning and the support students receive in this regard, and the continuity of distance learning. Also, the Council reviewed the implementation of the strategic plan for the development of UOB 2020-2025. In addition, the University President presented a number of the steps taken in the previous period to the Council, such as the digital transformation of the University and work done to develop the website.

An Academic at UOB Uses Microbes for Diesel Desulphurization

 

The Dutch scientific journal “Biotechnology Reports” published an applied environmental study, in which the Assistant Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bahrain (UOB), Dr. Maison Nizam Awadh participated as part of a team that included a group of researchers and experts from the GCC universities. The study aims to use types of biological microbes that work to desulphurize diesel fuel in petroleum refineries since Sulphur causes environmental and health problems, as it affects the tissues of the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin.

The researcher Dr. Awadh, worked on separating a mixed-strains bacterial farm from Galali Lake in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and then studied its ability to bio-remove Sulphur from diesel fuel. Furthermore, Dr. Awadh confirmed that the study revealed that the reason for the lake’s pink color is caused by the presence of Sulphur-reducing bacteria using inorganic sulphur present in the surrounding medium to produce food, as the bacteria use natural pigments with bright colors found in their cells to do photosynthesis and make their own food. It is noteworthy that Galali Lake, which has a distinctive pink color, appeared in an area prone to marine fill, as the first salty lake of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Also, Dr. Awadh explained that what distinguishes this study is the use of advanced OMEX techniques to study the biological and functional diversity of the bacterial communities present in the different environmental samples, as the OMEX techniques are mainly based on the direct extraction of the genetic material of the microbes present in the environmental samples, which prevents 99% of the defects of the traditional method that is based on microbial farming using food cultures.

The research and study team included professors from different Gulf universities, led by Professor Wael Al-Muslimani, a specialist in microbiology and environmental biotechnology at the Arabian Gulf University, Dr. Huda Mahmoud, a specialist in marine environmental sciences and microorganisms at the University of Kuwait, and Professor Raed Abed, a specialist in marine environmental sciences and microorganism at Sultan Qaboos University.

It’s worth mentioning that the Dutch scientific journal Biotechnology Reports is the most prestigious scientific journal with a high scientific index in the field of biotechnology research and falls under the umbrella of the international publishing house (Elsevier).

 The President of the University of Bahrain (UOB), Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, confirmed UOB’s commitment to providing all means of support and aid for students with disabilities, in order to provide infrastructure and services that suit the needs of students of UOB from this segment, and enable them to benefit from the University’s services and facilities similar to their peers and fellow students, expressing at the same time his pride in how outstanding students with disabilities at UOB are.

During the participation of Prof. Hamza in the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which was organized by UOB on Tuesday evening (8 December 2020), he stated in his speech that “We at UOB are proud of our dear students with disabilities and are committed to providing all means of support and assistance to them to enable them to achieve scientific and academic accomplishment in an appropriate environment and an atmosphere that motivates them to be creative and excel, thanks to the unlimited support provided by our wise leadership to our National University at various levels, on top of which is the support for the disabled category and the personal attention provided by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the Crown Prince and Honorable Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the late Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, may God have mercy on him, and the initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Vice President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Chairman of the Olympic Committee Bahraini, in the field of empowering and supporting people with disabilities, which would develop and grow the skills and capabilities of people with disabilities, which would reflect on enhancing their integration and contribute to encouraging them to participate in the Kingdom’s development process. "

Through the virtual communication platform Microsoft Teams, Prof. Hamzah pointed out that “UOB’s focus on people with disabilities comes within the national strategy for persons with disabilities, which is based on the vision of the Kingdom of Bahrain government on building a Bahraini society with solidarity, compassion and justice. "

Moreover, the President of UOB, Prof. Hamzah, indicated that UOB has invested the capabilities and resources to provide the infrastructure, facilities and services that suit the needs of UOB students from this segment, and enable them to benefit from the University's services and facilities similar to their peers and fellow students in an equal manner that makes it easier for them to spend their University day and benefit from all academic programs and cultural, sports, and artistic activities and other extra-curricular activities that the University provides for students to refine their personal skills and abilities.

Also, he praised the capabilities of people with disabilities and said: “The creative abilities and innovations that people with disabilities have deserve to be given the opportunity and to allow them to move towards transforming their dreams, aspirations and goals into a tangible and prominent reality in their lives and societies with persistence, determination and willpower, and that is by providing them with facilities and support to overcome the difficulties they face, support their aspirations and hopes, and facilitate their path, so that they can be effective in all sites and forums. "

For her part, the Dean of Student Affairs at UOB, Dr. Fatima Mohammed Al-Malki, congratulated the participants in IDPD, and thanked the rational leadership for its great interest in people with disabilities and the support that the Kingdom provides to this important segment of society and for believing in their role in building the country and consolidating the bonds of society, and in the great energies and capabilities of such individuals, which have contributed and continue to contribute to the development of various sectors.

Also, the Dean of Student Affairs highlighted Bahraini models who excelled in all fields, including those with disabilities who have achieved unforgettable accomplishments in various fields.

For their part, students with disabilities expressed their happiness and appreciation for the efforts made by UOB and the Deanship of Student Affairs in their continuous assistance and encouragement, praising the great interest that the University gives to students with disabilities and fulfilling their requirements continuously. As the celebration witnessed statements by several students with disabilities and their parents.

It’s worth mentioning that the celebration was organized by the Deanship of Student Affairs at UOB, aiming to highlight the talents of students with disabilities, emphasize the creative and positive aspects of students with disabilities, and inspire students to be motivated, persistent and defiant by participating in various programs.

The celebration is organized by the Deanship of Student Affairs at UOB and it aims to highlight the talents of students with disabilities, emphasize the creative and positive aspects of students with disabilities, and inspire students to be motivated, persistent and defiant by participating in various programs.

On this occasion, it is planned that the President of the University, Prof. Hamzah, and the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Fatima Mohammed Al-Maliki will both give a speech during the celebration.

Within the Steps to Academic Success Program, the Guidance and Counseling Department at the Deanship of Student Affairs at the University of Bahrain (UOB) organized a lecture for students, entitled: "University Life Between Academic Achievement and Extracurricular Activity." which aims to develop students' skills in various fields through several activities.

The lecture was presented on the virtual communication platform (Microsoft Teams) by the Assistant Professor at Department of Information Systems at College of Information Technology, Dr. Resala Abdullah Al-Adraj, in which she talked about the concept of student activities, the role of activities in developing social responsibility and hobbies, and the impact of extracurricular activity on social relations, in addition to its impact on the cultural level.

Also, Dr. Al-Darraj stated that student activities are the link between the university stage and the labor market because they help students develop the skills required in the labor market, and train them to take responsibility in completing the tasks assigned to them and that extracurricular student activities provide an opportunity to build positive relationships and experiment with different types of personalities.

The Steps to Academic Success Program is organized by the Guidance and Counseling Department and it includes a series of lectures and workshops organized every semester to developing students' motivation towards learning, raising the level of their ambitions, and developing their cognitive abilities and scientific expertise.

President of UOB: Digital Transformation Has Become A Priority and A Necessity

The President of the University of Bahrain (UOB), Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, confirmed that e-learning has become a priority for the survival of higher education institutions, according to many international reports, indicating that digital transformation is not an option in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, but rather a necessity.

This came during a speech he made yesterday (Sunday) during the opening of the Sixth International E-Learning Conference (ECONF) organized by UOB in cooperation with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with the participation of experts and researchers from 40 countries.

Moreover, Prof. Riyad Hamzah stated that “We firmly believe that all higher education institutions and research centers must realize that a new era has just begun, an era characterized fundamentally by new capabilities for learning and communication due to modern technologies, as millions of people are connected by mobile devices with unprecedented processing, storage capacity, and access to knowledge,” noting that “ these capabilities will be doubled through technical development in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of things, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials sciences, energy storage, cloud computing, and others. ”

Furthermore, he added, "We are confident that the University will continue to advance through e-learning, the intensive use of information and communication technology, the continuous production of knowledge and the embrace of twenty-first-century skills, especially innovation, creativity, problem-solving, flexibility and entrepreneurship."

Also, Prof. Hamzah said, "We will continue to support our students to become global competitors ready to achieve the highest levels of competitiveness in all economic sectors."

The conference was held through visual communication technology and lasted for two days, with the participation of 300 researchers, experts, and technicians in the fields of distance learning, teaching methods and learning technologies from about 40 countries in the world.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that the conference was organized by the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research and it discussed 85 research papers on several topics, including sustainable higher education, learning at home and workplaces, distance education, co-education, return on investment on distance learning, e-learning models and theories, learning management systems, information literacy, and ethical issues in e-learning.

For his part, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, Dr. Mohammed Redha Qadir stressed that " After all that we have gone through, e-learning has currently confirmed its position as a vital strategic tool that has sufficient potential to achieve sustainability, whether in the educational, administrative or economic dimension."

Moreover, he said that the educational process continues as efficiently and effectively as we really want,” pointing out to the students’ wonderful efforts to learn at home. As nearly the whole world works from home these days, and in many cases, it is proving to be a very productive and effective method, especially in terms of cost.

The conference sessions were held on its second day, yesterday (Monday – 7 December 2020), within three periods of six simultaneous sessions, before the activities of the international event were concluded with discussion sessions for case studies from different countries.

The University of Bahrain (UOB) reviewed two experiences of students with disabilities who successfully graduated from the University, during the celebration organized by King Abdulaziz University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (5 December 2020), to celebrate the International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPD) with the participation of several universities in the GCC.

The Deanship of Student Affairs at UOB participated with an event entitled "Success for Students with Disabilities", during which a graduate of the College of Arts at UOB and currently an English language teacher in the schools of the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Hana Al-Jamri, presented her success story, and how she overcame her sight impairment and was able to reach her goals and achieve her ambitions. Also, she participated in a singing performance done by students of the Music Club with the participation of students with disabilities.

The celebration was held on the virtual communication platform "Zoom", during which the Dean of Student Affairs at UOB, Dr. Fatima Mohammed Al-Malki, explained the idea of ??designing the logo for the Committee for Follow-up of the Affairs of Students with Special Needs in universities and higher education institutions in the GCC, and she stated that "The slogan was inspired by the wheelchair to denote disability in general, and there is a person at the top of this chair to signify honor and pride, in addition to the logo of the GCC countries surrounded by the flags of the Gulf countries."

Furthermore, the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Bahrain, Dr. Al-Maliki, launched the committee's social networking sites.

UOB Offers A Remarkable Program for Women Leaders in Higher Education

 

In cooperation with the British Higher Education Academy (Advance HE), the Excellence in Education and Leadership Skills Unit at the University of Bahrain (UOB) announced offering the "She Leads" program, in conjunction with the Kingdom of Bahrain's celebrations of the Bahraini Women's Day that falls on the first of December of each year.

The Unit Director, Dr. Diana Abdulkarim Al-Jahromi, stated that "The program aims to develop leadership skills for women leaders in all sectors of higher education institutions locally, regionally and in the Arab world, and to explore what leadership represents for women in higher education today, the leadership context in which women work, as well as the opportunities and challenges related to women leaders’ leadership and professional development. "

Moreover, Dr. Al-Jahromi pointed out that the program "Is the first of its kind in the region, and it reflects the global experience of the British Higher Education Academy in working with women leaders in academia through the Aurora Program in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which has developed the capabilities of more than 6000 women in more than 175 institutions."

Also, Dr. Al-Jahromi explained that the new program consists of a series of workshops that will be offered on the cyberspace, and the content shall adapt to local outputs and keep pace - at the same time - with the requirements and challenges of the work of women leaders in the international higher education sector.

As the program focuses on developing leadership skills, including effective communication, good listening and observation, teamwork, mentoring, putting strategic plans and following up on their implementation, understanding policies, managing the external ecosystem, providing training and support, and decision-making.

Furthermore, she emphasized that the program will target female directors of departments, units, and academic centers, deans, deputies and presidents of universities and higher education institutions, adding that the workshops will be presented by a group of experts from the British Higher Education Academy, in order to take a qualitative leap ranging from the concept of individuals leadership, groups leadership, corporate leadership, to leadership in the higher education ecosystem.

Moreover, Dr. Al-Jahromi added that that the program provides participants with an opportunity to reach a wider community through the global educational networks of the Higher Education Academy, such as: the leadership and management network, the learning and education network, the employment network, the interdisciplinary research-based evaluation practices network, and others.

In this context, Dr. Al-Jahromi commended academic women assuming more leadership roles in higher education in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the region, which is related to more challenges based on their leadership in the education sector, being one of the most important sectors in achieving sustainable development goals, and future visions for the role of Bahraini women based on the principle of equal opportunities, which importance is stressed by the Supreme Council for Women.

ELC at UOB Introduces a Program to Support Employability Skills

"Foundation Programs" Conference Calls for the Inclusion of Career Paths in Academic Content

Based on the recommendations of the recently concluded Third International Conference on Foundation Programs, the English Language Center (ELC) at the University of Bahrain (UOB) announced that it is going to establish an integrated program in order to support job and life skills of its students.

Where around 1,200 participants from 50 countries around the world participated in this scientific event under the title "Extending Higher Education Learning beyond the Classroom: Integrating Life and Employability Skills".

The recommendations in the seminar held by the Conference on Tuesday (24 November 2020) were based on the scientific studies that were discussed during the Conference that was held on the Zoom platform.

The director of ELC at the University, Dr. Ghada Ahmed Jassim, explained that Employability Skills mean the ability to think critically, deal with crises, the ability to analyze, manage and develop oneself, and the ability to communicate and plan properly, as well as being flexible and active.

On its second day, the Conference hosted the keynote speaker, Director of Recruitment at Nottingham Trent University, Dr. Doug Cole, who presented a paper entitled " Developing a Future Facing Approach to Support Scalable Change in Higher Education Learning."

In his speech, Dr. Cole stressed the importance of taking research results into consideration and changing the view that is limited to skills and knowledge only in the field of employment, pointing to the need to diversify employment requirements to include all aspects of life such as personalized learning, interpersonal skills, flexibility and self-efficacy, mental health, and others. Also, Dr. Cole called on institutions to focus on the quality of the staff rather than the number in order to help the largest possible segment of graduates.

While faculty member of the College of Engineering at UOB, Dr. Bassam Abdulla Alhamad, presented a scientific paper entitled " Enhancing Employability through Student Empowerment in the Light of Economical Challenges and Pandemic of Covid-19."

Dr. Alhamad presented the efforts of UOB in integrating Employability Skills and increasing students' capabilities, an effort that is built on scientific foundations based on research, stressing the importance of identifying general and basic skills, and using them to develop curricula.

Moreover, Dr. Alhamad agreed with Dr. Cole on the importance of including such values ??in the recruitment processes, explaining that the skills of the twenty-first century lack the integration of these values ??within its provisions. As the former director of the Quality and Academic Accreditation Office at UOB called on the Higher Education Council to consider including students' capabilities within employment requirements, which include academic life, professional services, certificates, student activities, and others.

The Conference was held over three days and it brought together prominent speakers from different all over the world who enriched its sessions with insights and knowledge related to the essential aspects of employment. As the Conference addresses a wide range of issues, the most important of which are: cognitive qualifications, which have become the focus of higher education institutions. Also, the Conference stressed the importance of this approach, not only in the professional life of students, but teachers as well, indicating the need to add career path management and practical application in academic content, especially in light of the current economy that was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the Conference, the future of jobs and adapting educational curricula and teaching methods to suit the current situation were discussed in several presentations.

And at the end of the event, the results of the "Best Picture" competition were announced, which was held in cooperation between ELC and the National Geographic Educational Foundation.

(Alba), signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Bahrain (UOB) on Monday, 14the of September 2020 for the establishment of a cooperation program between the two parties in several research and academic programs, as the agreement was signed by the President of UOB, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, and the CEO of Alba, Mr. Ali Albaqali, at the Company's headquarters.

During the memorandum signing ceremony, the two parties discussed the latest developments in the joint research project between Alba and UOB, which shall contribute to enhancing the Company's efforts to adopt renewable solar energy, thus ensuring a sustainable future for future generations. This initiative comes in line with the goals of the National Plan for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency as well as Alba's strategic direction to move towards green aluminum.

On this occasion, Prof. Riyad Hamzah said, “We are so happy to sign a memorandum of understanding with Alba, which is one of the largest industrial companies in the world in the field of aluminum smelting and production, and we would like to emphasize that this agreement shall pave the way for greater cooperation, especially in the fields of scientific research, training, and improvement of academic programs.".

Furthermore, the University President extended his thanks and gratitude to Alba for its continuous support to the University, its reception of students for practical training programs in various engineering and administrative disciplines, and the participation of its engineers in many joint committees for the industrial and engineering programs at the University.

For his part, Alba CEO, Mr. Ali Albaqali stated that “This memorandum of understanding comes as an extension of many joint cooperation initiatives between the Company and the University in various fields over the years. As this national partnership will enhance our joint efforts to invest in the human element through qualification And the development of national cadres, which will contribute to advancing the goals of the Kingdom of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030.”

It’s hoped that the memorandum will contribute to conducting various research projects, and to involve graduate students in conducting research and studies of interest to Alba, in addition to developing academic programs that support the industrial sector in Bahrain. Also, the memorandum provides for support for internships for both students and faculty members, in addition to the exchange of information and joint scientific and technical publications.
