University of Bahrain Organizes Workshop on Plant Molecular Genetics and Modern Applications

The University of Bahrain organized a workshop titled “Plant Molecular Genetics and Its Modern Applications” on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, aimed at strengthening students’ practical knowledge and research skills in molecular biology.

The workshop, in which undergraduate Biology students participated, featured a series of interactive lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions covering the fundamentals of plant molecular genetics, including the central dogma of molecular biology, plant genome organization, DNA extraction, and an introduction to Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis. Participants also learned how to interpret molecular data and the applications of molecular genetics in crop improvement, molecular diagnostics, developing disease-resistant varieties, and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Dr. Aftab Ahmad, Associate Professor at the Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center (NMSRC), University of Nizwa, Sultanate of Oman, presented a concluding lecture showcasing CRISPR-Cas genome editing technology through an outstanding scientific presentation that highlighted the latest advances in genome editing and its applications in plant biotechnology, crop improvement, and modern biological research.
